CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hubert and Jan van Eyck
It is one of the enigmas of art.
And art, thus freed from the academism of the Gothic tradition, was not to slavishly copy nature, but to serve as a vehicle for the expression of the painter's personality, and to act as the safest confidante of his emotional experiences.
Thus the art of the Van Eycks would be but the culminating point of the great Renaissance movement inaugurated at the Court of the Valois in France, and which reached its apogee in 1400.

 The Renaissance
The art spread rapidly and before the close of the fifteenth century presses were busy in every country of Europe--in the city of Venice alone there were two hundred--multiplying books with a rapidity undreamed of by the patient copyists of the cloister.
Th e art that would be the handmaid of the Church needed to be able to represent faith and hope, ecstasy and suffering,--none of which things can well be expressed by sculpture, which is essentially the art of repose.
This art alone enabled him to portray the raptures of the saint, the sweet charm of the Madonna, the intense passion of the Christ, the moving terrors of the Last Judgment.

Following a terrible defeat in the Battle of Kosovo of 1389, the Serbian Empire began to crumble, the south being conquered by the Ottoman Empire.
The Ottomans, however, wanted Belgrade no matter what the cost as it was considered the "key to the Balkans" and also the "key of Hungary" they invaded in 1456, leading to the famous Siege of Belgrade where the Christian army under John Hunyadi successfully defended the city from the Ottomans.
