Christopher Columbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
History places great significance on his landing in America in 1492, with the entire period of the history of the Americas before this date usually known as Pre-Columbian, and the anniversary of this event, Columbus Day, being celebrated in many parts of America.
Columbus' struggles to "civilize" the Americas, and the subsequent effects on the native peoples, were dramatised in 1492: Conquest of Paradise to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his landing in the Americas.
Official celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage in 1492 were muted in some areas, and a few demonstrators protested marking the anniversary at all.

Filmtracks: 1492: Conquest of Paradise (Vangelis)
All film scores are created for the sole purpose of complimenting their respective films, but in the case of 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Vangelis has managed to do just the opposite --an opposite that is quite difficult to obtain.
With his synthetic and choral score for this film about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the new world, he has produced a mass hit on the record store shelves and a completely inappropriate score for the film.
But his basic repetitive electronic style of composing still remains, and it is certainly odd to hear him throw in some mandolins and guitars just to provide the Spanish emphasis.

The Moors, Muslim invaders, entered Spain from North Africa in 711, conquering much of it, and it was not until 1492 that they were finally driven out.
The unification of Spain was finally completed by the conquest of Granada, the last Moorish stronghold, in 1492, and by Ferdinand's annexation of Spanish Navarre in 1512.

June 11, 2003 It was warm enough and not rainy enough last Friday for us to make our first summer stop at 1492 (Clinton @ Stanton/Rivington), which boasts our favorite undiscovered LES back garden.
