The Squadron was first formed in 1939 as a bombing and reconnaissance unit and equipped with three JU 86 aircraft.
A look through the squadron's scrap book reveals the large number of humanitarian missions it has performed over the years but the most famous it has participated in must be the rescue of the passengers and crew of the Oceanos cruise liner which sank off the Transkei Coast on 4 August 1991.
These days it still performs such humanitarian missions as may be required and fulfils a variety of other roles including crime prevention in support of the army and police in the rural areas of Kwazulu Natal, and a yearly stint of duty in the ongoing peacekeeping operation in Burundi.

South Africa - Air Force Equipment
The establishment of the SAAF was greatly facilitated by the extremely generous decision by the Imperial Government in 1919 to allocate to the Union some 100 aeroplanes from its war stocks, complete with spared and equipment.
Under this scheme the SAAF began to burgeon and blossom, and by September 1941 the total number of military aircraft in the Union had increased to 1 709, while the personnel strength had leapt to 31 204 - 956 of whom were pilots.
The unit was renamed the SAAF Regiment on 1 August 1943, its task being the defence of airfields and the capture of enemy aerodromes.

Another titbit is a peculiarity of 1 Squadron that I (and many other fellow SAAF hobby historians) was not aware of was the use of personal nose art decorations, such as the leaping Springbok used by Lt. Stewart “Bomb” Finney on his Hurricane MKIIC.
For 2 Squadron “The Flying Cheetahs”, this covers exploits in WW2 with P-40’s and Sptfires, Korea with F-51’s and F-86’s, the drawn out “Border War” in Angola using Mirage IIIC and E’s, to the equipping with Atlas Cheetahs in the late 1980’s and current preparations for receipt of the new SAAB Gripen.
While several squadrons traded their fixed wing aircraft for rotors, the example of 10 Fighter Bomber Squadron is probably the most extreme as currently this unit, which flew Spitfires in WW2, is totally devoted to the use of unmanned aerials vehicles (UAV’s).
