Upon election as Pope in March 1513, Giovanni de' Medici promoted the careers of his nephew, Lorenzo de' Medici, who was Duke of Urbino (1515), and of his brother, Giuliano de' Medici, who was married at the French court in February 1515.
Giuliano de' Medici was familiar with Raphael's work, since he had lived at the court of Urbino from 1494 until 1512, and in 1515 Raphael was attached to his household in Rome.
Raphael's portrait of Giuliano de' Medici is mentioned in a letter from Bembo to Cardinal Bibbieno in April 1516 and was later seen by Vasari.
