Science fiction developed and boomed in the 20th century, as the deep penetration of science and inventions into society created an interest in literature that explored technology's influence on people and society.
Although normally associated with the gothic horror genre, the novel introduces science fiction themes such as the use of technology for achievements beyond the scope of science at the time, and the alien as antagonist, furnishing a view of the human condition from an outside perspective.

I suspect that we are only reaching a minimal number of students in areas other than the sciences, that students in the humanities and in the arts do not look to us for instruction as a way to broaden their intellectual horizons beyond the subject matter requirements of their particular disciplines.
After all, undergraduates in the humanities are not pariahs, and we are missing something in not educating these potential voters about botany, let alone not satisfying their intellectual curiosity as educated human beings.
The motion is easily carried owing to the minority of botanists on the biological science faculty.
