 Transatlantic Slave Trade
Disease, malnutrition, and Spanish atrocities led to the deaths of millions of the Indians of the Americas.
By the 1520s the depopulation of the region prompted the Spanish government to look for alternative sources of labor.
The first transatlantic slave voyages from Africa to the Americas occurred in the early 1520s on Portuguese vessels sailing from West Africa to the large Caribbean island of Hispaniola, the earliest European name for present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Some 25 religious and secular manuscripts are known, dating from the early 1520s to the mid-1530s, with others from the middle of the century.
These are mainly Books of Hours, the calendar illumination, main miniatures, saints’ vignettes and decorative motifs (both traditional and classicizing) of which show a continuing stylistic tradition.
The 1520s Hours Workshop has long been associated with Geofroy Tory, the Bourges-born Parisian humanist, publisher and printer.

By the 1520s, Bissolo had skillfully assimilated many lessons from Bellini, but his work also shows the further influence of Palma Vecchio, another respected Venetian painter.
The creation of religious pictures such as this during the Renaissance was an important livelihood for many painters, who often apprenticed to a given master or succession of mentors.
Bissolo's reputation grew during the 1520s and 1530s, and he received commissions from the Bishop of Padua and an important printer and canon of the cathedral of Treviso.

The 1520s Hours Workshop was primarily engaged in the production of "jewel-like" luxury books of hours for a wealthy clientele.
Until recently the workshop was believed to be located in Tours, France, but new evidence points to Paris as the site of its activity under the direction of the Antwerp-born miniaturist Noël Bellemare (died 1546).
Another link to the Antwerp Mannerists is found in woodblock prints and engravings, many of which apparently served as models to the workshop.

Austria - The Protestant Reformation in the Habsburg Lands   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
From the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in the 1520s, Protestant doctrines were welcomed by the people living in the areas under Habsburg domination.
Religious violence and serious persecution were rare after the 1520s, and an uneasy coexistence and external tolerance prevailed for most of the sixteenth century.
Ferdinand pressed Rome for concessions that would bridge the positions of moderate reformers and Catholics, but at the Council of Trent (1545-63), the Catholic Church chose instead a vigorous restatement of Catholic doctrine combined with internal reforms.

Nicola da Urbino - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The documents reveal little about the artistic side of Nicola di Gabriele's business or how large his workshop was, but he is the only figulus (potter) of the name prominent in Urbino documents in the 1520s and 1530s, and there is no serious doubt about the identification.
A little later than this is what must have been one of the most prestigious commissions of the 1520s, an armorial set made for the great collector Isabella d'Este, marchioness of Mantua.
A third set, very similar in style but slightly less exquisitely executed, was made about the same time for a member of the Calini family of Brescia.
