With the introduction of this new book in 1549 the number of official forms in use throughout the country was reduced to one-The Book of Common Prayer.
Two main differences in the way that we use the BCP today are that in 1549- The Prayer for the Church forms a continuous part of the Prayer of Consecration, while the Confession and Absolution come after The Prayer of Consecration, with The Prayer of Humble Access following directly before the Priest's communion.
There were no hymnbooks in 1549, but part of the service could be sung to plainsong arranged in the simplified form of one syllable to each note by John Merbecke and published 1550.

The First Book of Common Prayer 9 June 1549   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In 1549, under the reign of Edward VI, successor to Henry VIII, the primary language of public worship in England and other areas ruled by Edward was changed from Latin to English, and the first Book of Common Prayer came into use.
It was first used on Pentecost Sunday, 9 June 1549, and the occasion is now commemorated "on the first convenient day following Pentecost." The Book was the work of a commission of scholars, but primarily of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury.
The older usage had grown haphazardly through the centuries, and had added so many complications that it was difficult to follow (the priest often needed to juggle up to a dozen books to get through a single service).

Morehouse Publishing and the 1549 B.C.P"The First English Prayer Book?"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The title is misleading and I do not recommend the book if you want a genuine reproduction of the first B.C.P. The spelling has been modernized (which is OK) but also the rubrics have been shortened, simplified and heavily edited (which is not OK) in order it appears to make the text easily accessible today.
The first part, the prayer for the Church, is omitted and put as an appendix to be used if desired and in its place, within the text, provision is made for local forms of intercession as well as for the omission of the whole Consecration Prayer and then for communion from the reserved sacrament.
One is left to presume that the editor did not think that what he left out was suitable for use today in small English parishes and that his simplified and re-arranged1549 services are what are usable today when there is a resident priest or where a layreader is in charge.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Anglicanism
Whether it ever received the assent of Convocation has been questioned, but it was approved by Parliament in 1549.
Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, in opposing Cranmer's denial of the Real Presence and of the Sacrifice of the mass, argued that even certain passages in the new Prayer Book implied the acceptance of these doctrines; whereupon Cranmer and his fellow-reformers drew up a new Prayer Book, still more Protestant in tone and character.
In November, 1558, Queen Elizabeth succeeded Queen Mary, and immediately proceeded to restore the work of Henry VIII and Edward VI.
