 Italian Literature
As another result, Italian literature has borne from its earliest days a strongly marked classicism, not only in the narrow sense of adherence to classical principles of style, but also in the broader sense of respect for tradition.
It fuses, too, the secular motifs of the age; the threads of the amatory conventions of the courtly love, the satiric postures of earlier vernacular writings, the idealization of knightly virtues are all woven into the philosophical-theological tapestry.
These academies were of interest primarily to the scholars and philosophers of the time, and were mainly concerned with subjects tangential to literature; it might even be contended that their influence on literature proper was not a healthy one.

Péter Ilosvai Selymes was the author of a romance, Az híres nevezetes Toldi Miklósnak jeles cselekedetirol (1574; "The Story of the Remarkable Nicholas Toldi's Extraordinary and Brave Deeds"), which achieved great popularity in Hungary and served as a basis for a masterpiece by János Arany in the 19th century.
This romance was the one original piece in the flow of the mere entertainment literature characteristic of the 16th century, the principal genre of which was the széphistória ("beautiful story"), adapted from western European originals.
Among the most absorbing are the autobiography of the well-traveled Miklós Bethlen, a leading Transylvanian statesman, and the confessions and memoirs (written in Latin and French, respectively) of Ferenc Rákóczi II, exiled prince of Transylvania and leader of the anti-Habsburg insurrection of 1703-11.

Nearly every praise of friendship in Renaissance literature, be it trite and stale or genuinely moving, allots a line or two for an allusion to the friendship of Achilles and Patroclus.
The dullest and most often repeated cliché in friendship literature is the "catalogue of famous friends" that originates in the eighth fragment of Bion, in which he praises the men who have found mutual love: Achilles and Patroclus, Orestes and Pylades, and Theseus and Pirithous.
Just as the physical attributes of the beautiful boy have been usurped by the mistress in Renaissance literature, so now have the ethical and aesthetic philosophies of homosexual love been usurped by the courtier for the seduction of his lady.
