The Galileo Project | Science | Tycho Brahe
In general, whereas previous astronomers made observations accurate to perhaps 15 arc minutes, those of Tycho were accurate to perhaps 2 arc minutes, and it has been shown that his best observations were accurate to about half an arc minute.
Tycho's observations of the new star of 1572 and comet of 1577, and his publications on these phenomena, were instrumental in establishing the fact that these bodies were above the Moon and that therefore the heavens were not immutable as Aristotle had argued and philosophers still believed.
This Tychonic world system became popular early in the seventeenth century among those who felt forced to reject the Ptolemaic arrangement of the planets (in which the Earth was the center of all motions) but who, for various reasons, could not accept the Copernican alternative.

 SCIENCE BRIEFS
It was logical to conclude that the explosions of supernovae in space would spread dust (mainly as carbon and silicate particles) but astronomers had not seen enough dust around supernovae to support this idea.
Thus, irrigation farming was combined with a hunting and gathering economy to support the increase in local population size.
Some astronomers argue it to be the "tenth planet." Because Ceres is located in the "asteroid belt" it was presumed to be homogeneous in structure and therefore not a planet.

 SCIENCE AS RELIGION
The evidence is to be seen in the religious language routinely used for the scientific enterprise conceived within that framework.
In such a world view it becomes sensible to try and understand the world, and this is the fundamental reason science developed as it did in the Middle Ages in Christian Europe, culminating in the brilliant achievements of the seventeenth century.
Part of the genius of modern empirical science was precisely its use of recurring natural events to provide observable checks on hypotheses.

In many cases, the limited science that's available can't accurately predict what will happen when a particular dam is removed.
The inherent complexity of river systems and each dam's unique effect on its waterway lead to the complicated nature of dam-removal science, explains David Hart, a river ecologist from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
Researchers are considering both small dams, such as those that dot rivers along the northeastern U.S. coast, and the large ones typical of the Pacific Northwest.

 Strange Science: Sea Monsters
In Seba's day, the line between science and art was pretty fuzzy, but it arguably made the science more entertaining.
Seventy years later, Alexander Winchell did two admirable things: He called Denys de Montfort's depiction a sailor's yarn, but also suggested, "the unexplored depths of the ocean conceal the forms of octopods that far surpass in magnitude any of the species known to science." Winchell was right on both counts.
