Commodore 1581 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Commodore 1581 is a 3½ inch double sided double density floppy disk drive made by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) primarily for its C64 and C128 home/personal computers.
The 1581 provides a total of 3160 blocks free when formatted (a block being equal to 256 bytes).
With a storage capacity of 800 KB, the 1581 was the highest capacity serial bus drive ever made by Commodore (the 1 MB SFD-1001 used the parallel IEEE-488), and the only 3½" one.

One difference between the 1581 and earlier drive types such as the 1541 and 1571 is the functioning of the drive activity light.
If the 1581 is connected to a C128 and the computer is turned on or reset in the 128 mode, the 1581 (like the 1571) will attempt to autoboot from the disk.
The 1581 uses one serial line for burst mode (128 mode only) that the C64 doesn't support, and that line is also used by the datassette for its read function.

The result was well worth it--a 1581 disk that autoboots, copies the dictionary modules into the REU, and loads TWS in a minute and 39 seconds with no user intervention after turning on the C128.
These changes are designed for using the 1581 as drive 8, the REU as drive 10 and any 15X1 drive as drive 9.
This is what you would want to do if you have no REU and you want to use the 1581 for your spell checker.

This is because once the 1581 reads the directory of a disk, it stores this directory in its RAM, and doesn't access the disk again until senses that a new disk has been put in.
The problem might be characterized as the 1581 not being able to keep up with the data sent it by the VIC, and quitting when it seems to hit the apparent end of the data.
The 1581 apparently does not have the "UI-" command of the 1541 the command documented in the 1581 manual, the seeming nearest to this, "UI" being merely to "jump to ($fffa) reset tables".

Commodore 128 : Commodore 1581 disk drive credits command
Because of the RAM shortage in early PETS (8K!) Commodore disk drives were little computers in themselves with DOS in ROM and you would send commands to them and then read the error channel to see how the disk drive had carried out or failed to carry out the command.
You could tell the disk drive to format a floppy, unplug it from the computer and it would continue the task.
The 1581, a 3 1/2" MFM disk drive, made primarily for the C'128, had easter egg commands.

The 1581 is still a gem, however, being capable of both 1571 style speed, while still being backward compatible with the Commodore 64s I/O. Like all Commodore disk drives, the 1581 is a "smart" device.
When a disk drive contained more than one floppy drive (like the 1572 for instance), you also had to refer to the particular "drive" number you wanted (typically 0 or 1).
Single-floppy drives, like the 1581, still had to deal with the legacy of the old IEEE-488 dual drives and the version of CBM DOS with which they were compatible by referring to their single floppy as "drive 0".

However, I don't think it applies to the 1581 at all: On the 1541 and 1571 drives, the drive reads one sector at a time, and has some pause time in between sector reads.
However, the stock 1581 comes with enough RAM to simply read an entire track in one read, thus eliminating the need for an interleave.
