Huntington / Ambition, Rank, and Poetry in 1590s England
He argues that these writers, while recognizing that their very survival depended on the favor of wealthy patrons, nonetheless invested their poetry with a new social vision that challenged a nobility of blood and proposed a nobility of learning instead.
Ambition, Rank, and Poetry in 1590s England focuses on the early work of George Chapman and on the writings of others who shared his social agenda and his nonprivileged status, including Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and Edmund Spenser as well as neglected writers such as Matthew Roydon and Aemilia Lanyer.
By means of this precarious enterprise, poetry became a declaration of cultural presence and the poet constructed his or her own social importance apart from, and sometimes in opposition to, the established hierarchies.

In Marcus Gheeraerts' famous 'Ditchley portrait' of 1592, this ageless Elizabeth is endowed with the power to transcend the forces of nature, bestriding the realm like a colossus and holding even the sun and storm at her command.
Elizabeth's contemporaries were also highly conscious of the declining 'quality' of the council in the 1590s -- in other words, the number of noblemen (and especially earls) who served on the council bench.
Just as her advancement of Essex in the early 1590s can be seen partly as a move to create a counterbalance to Burghley, so her promotion of Cecil was intended to dent Essex's political pretensions and remind him of her princely authority.

Fathom :: The Source for Online Learning
This is not to say that circulation of poems in manuscript to a small coterie of friends ceased in the 1590s: manuscript--often in multiple copies--continued to be a major method of publication until the latter part of the seventeenth century and beyond.
Through the 1590s even these very effective forms of government were creaking under the weight of a population which had expanded from about 35,000 in 1500 to about 200,000 in 1600.
London in the 1580s and 1590s generated a giddily accelerated literary history, fueled by competition, by the desire to earn and to win patronage, and by the desire to pass into the magic circle of named, canonical writers.

ASPECTS OF WATCHFULNESS AND COMMAND IN THE 1590s MILITARY CAMP AND SHAKESPEARE'S HENRY V
Yet he does not distinguish between salient features of the military camp of the very early sixteen hundreds from those of the military camps in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds as examples of rupture or the onset of a new type of series or system of relations in his own historical analysis.
The outcome of inconclusive confrontations at sea and battles fought on continental soil was recovery and increase in maritime strength for the Spanish and in England an intensification of fear of enemy invasion.
In the manuals and manuscripts, the qualities that (royal) leaders should possess are in accordance with a set of conventions different from those of the stage in the 1590s in which a disguised monarch mingles with his subjects.

Sheffield Hallam Working Papers: Teaching Renaissance Texts
I explained that Orlin’s model was not, ultimately, one that I had chosen to follow that semester; in designing the course it seemed disingenuous to choose the 1590s for the richness of its literary output and then craft a syllabus that ignored that literature.
My reason for choosing a single decade was to allow for greater attention to historical and cultural context, to help students to find resonance between the works they were reading, and also between those works and the culture in which they were written.
Thesis: ‘The readers of the 1590s believed that God did not randomly bestow good looks, intelligence, and virtue; they were given to his chosen people and one was not given without the other two.

Although I have not found anything to show that the Dutch developments were linked to simultaneous Japanese developments, they could have been, as the Dutch were regular visitors to Nagasaki as early as the 1590s, and were providing the Satsuma clan with cavalry and gunnery instructors as late as 1649.

 Shakespeare, Sonnet 124
Sonnets in English, which began to be written earlier in sixteenth century, did not peak until the 1590s, just after Sir Philip Sidney's sonnet sequence (the first sequence in English) became published.
Although written in the 1590s, Shakespeare's sonnet sequence would not be published until almost twenty years after Sidney's cycle first made waves.
During the 1590s, sonnets, like those of Shakespeare, were primarily about secular love.

1590s Drama and Militarism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
1590s Drama and Militarism is a fascinating interdisciplinary study of various textual interventions into the military realities of the late Elizabethan period.
Its major strength is its insistence on the discursive nature of militarism, and the author convincingly uses literary and non-literary texts-including manuals and contemporary military correspondence-to reconstruct the particular anxieties which surrounded the military exigencies of the 1590s, a particularly fraught and unstable period of the aging queen's reign.
The literature of the 'art of war' has been little studied by literary scholars, despite their richly rhetorical nature.

Like the some of the people of the 1590s, Doctor Faustus searches for the "forbidden knowledge" which leads him to deny God during his quest for greater knowledge and gains nothing from his vain activities throughout his lifetime.
Doctor Faustus and the people of the 1590s hardly obtain any riches or grand treasures for their endless searches for "forbidden knowledge".
The people of the 1590s did not so much as ask for forgiveness to what they had done, but they begin to wonder whether or not what they had found, through their search for the "forbidden knowledge", was really necessary.

All I had to go on was "Cut My Cote" and the knowledge that all garment construction began with geometric shapes sewn together, so I determined to start with that as a basis.

This paper is concerned with spatial representations of the military camp in different genres of writing as a means of coping with the spectre of powerlessness engendered by the Spanish incursions on English shores during the 1590s.
The paper accommodates certain military treatises and one play into structures of power adapted from Foucault but rendered as spatial signifying practices by de Certeau and Lefebvre.
Taken together with Chapman's Caesar and Pompey the paper aims to show how these varying genres crystallise into a debate around problems of order, containment and defence in response to specific events.

HUNTINGTON, IN OCTOBER 15, 1996 --- Huntington College will celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," with a production on the mainstage of the Merillat Centre for the Arts, November 7-9, at 8 p.m.
The play, written and first produced in the 1590s, tells the story of two star-crossed lovers whose lives get caught up in a tragic conflict between their two feuding families.
The Huntington College production, directed by Joseph Ricke, professor of English, brings the romance, lyricism, violence, and beauty of Shakespeare’s text into a distinctly American setting.

But Southampton did not get the Earl of Essex's vote in 1597 (though he did in '95 and '96); the attachment of Southampton to Essex begins with the Azores voyage later that year.
The theory of an Essex-Southampton social circle going back to the early 1590s is a myth originating in a misdated letter.
G.P.V. Akrigg's Shakespeare and the Earl of Southampton provided the evidence to puncture the myth, but Akrigg failed to realize its significance; the Garter election of 1597 provides more evidence.
