The division was a New Army unit formed in September 1914 as part of the K2 Army Group.
The division moved to France in July 1915 and spent the duration of the First World War in action on the Western Front.

The 15th Field Artillery (FA) Regiment was organized in Syracuse, New York on 1 June 1917.
Assignment to the 2nd Infantry Division (2nd ID) earned them the unofficial nickname of the 'Indianheads.' The 15th FA participated in 6 major campaigns during World War 1, firing 285,000 rounds, the greatest number of artillery rounds fired by any US Army Artillery Regiment during WW1.
By 1940, the 15th FA Regiment was reorganized as the 15th FA Battalion and served in 5 major campaigns in the European Theater with the 2nd Infantry Division during World War 2.

The 1st Armored Division intervened with the 1st Battalion from the 1st Tank Regiment east of Bratuseni in support of the 203rd Regiment from the German 76th Infantry Division that was in a critical situation because of an attack by Soviet tanks and repulsed the Soviet assault.
The 1st Armored Division received the mission to advance southwards, on the Mosana-Soroca (Soroki) direction and managed by 10 July to block the retreat path of the Soviet troops that were retreating towards Mogilev and to clear the right bank of the Dnister in the Soroca (Soroki) area.
It took up position to the right of the 15th Division and north of the 5th Corps, which was struggling to breach the front at Tiganca and breakout of the bridgehead.

Popularly known as the Plymouth Division and its shoulder insignia was a blue diamond with a red center and the figure "12" in white pierced by a bayonet.
At the time the armistice was signed the division had received for the demobilization of the division, and by January 31st the entire commissioned and enlisted personnel not in the regular establishment had been discharged.
All other units of the division were organized and undergoing intensive training at Camp Custer by the first week in November and at the time of the signing of the armistice the division was being rounded into shape for service at the front.

During World War One, the Division earned the nickname "The Rock of the Marne" for it's outstanding performance in one of the pivotal campaigns of the war.
After the fall of Rome four months later, the Division was withdrawn from Italy, and landed in Southern France to create the "hammer" to the "anvil" of the armies that landed in Normandy.
The "Rock" fought it's way into Germany, and at the end of the War was one of the few American Divisions to have been in combat continuously from the start to the end of the American involvement, and still end up in Germany at the finish.
