Canada has a deliciously rich culture and it's worth taking time to explore it and view it as distinct from its louder neighbour.
After WWI Canada grew slowly in stature and prosperity; it managed to formalise its independence from Britain in 1931 with the passage of the Statute of Westminster.
Canada played the friendly neighbour part by graciously accommodating grounded planes and passengers during the aftermath.

Frontier article - Frontier United States Canada 19th century European Pacific North America - What-Means.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Frontier in the United States and Canada was the term applied until the end of the 19th century to the zone of unsettled land outside the region of existing settlements of European immigrants and their descendants.
By the middle of the 18th century, much of the prime areas of the British colonies east of the Appalachian Mountains had been settled, resulting in a desire among many colonists to expand settlement into French-held Trans-Appalachia areas, such as the Ohio Country.
For the next century, the expansion of the nation into these areas, as well as the subsequently acquired Louisiana Purchase, Oregon Country, and Mexican Cession, would absorb much of the energy of the nation and largely define its politics and character, in particular in its relations with Native Americans.

 London in 15th century
In England in the middle of the 19th century, outbreaks of cholera were traced directly to well-water supplies contaminated with human waste from privy vaults and cesspools.
At the beginning of that century, drainage and water supply systems were all more or less primitive; nearly all the cities of that time had poorer water and drainage systems than Rome had possessed 1,800 years previously.
In the fifteenth century the system was extended, partly from private bequests, with new conduits in Fleet Street, Cornhill, Gracechurch Street and elsewhere, and new supplies in Islington, and in the 1540s water was brought from springs in Hampstead, Muswell Hill, Hackney and Marylebone.

Sub-Sahara African Christianity: A History of the Christian Church in Sub-Saharan Africa
The history of Christianity in Africa south of the Sahara begins in the fifteenth century, with the arrival of the first missionaries carrying the gospel from Europe.
These missionaries tended to be working class Christians with a pioneering spirit that led them to commit themselves to stay for the duration, to be very otherworldly in their view of salvation, and to be non-denominational in their view of the missionary enterprise, co-operating heartily with any other Christians for the furtherance of the gospel.
By the turn of the century Christians tended to be young, educated and powerful, though still often outsiders — traders, clerks, or migrant workers.

This is not necessarily a problem if you're just trying to estimate an overall total or trends over time (like, say, the 19th Century versus the 20th Century), but it makes some of his estimates unreliable on a case by case basis.
One problem with this translation is that it trims many of the calculations for wars before the 20th Century, so we pretty much have to take his pre-1900 estimates as given, without knowing how he arrived at them.
For example, his assertion that citizens of democracies are far less likely to die at the hands of their own governments is not surprising when we remember that not killing huge numbers of your own people is already included in the definition of democracy.
