16 Horsepower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
16 Horsepower were an alternative/traditional musical group based in Denver, Colorado.
One instrument that was paramount during the nascent days of 16 Horsepower was the Chemnitzer concertina.
It has been quite difficult for critics to assess 16 Horsepower due to the wide range of sounds they were able to produce during their brief career.

This is a typical 16 horsepower lyric and while the music is often dark as in this song they always manage to be uplifting rather than deppressing, perhaps because of the strong christian faith and hope of salvation wich lie at the core of David Eugene Edward's song writing.
16 Horsepower seems to appeal to as many non-christians as christians and this testifies to the power of Edwards music and lyrics they appeal to me because of the strenght in his belief and the beautiful and longing fealing of his music even though I don't share his conviction.
All 16 Horsepower's albums so far have been great but this one might be a good introduction to them as it's short has mostly great songs and can be found cheap.

 16 Horsepower Album Reviews
16 Horsepower's doom-laden take on roots music earned them a spot in both alt country and alternative rock, and turned them into one of the most original bands to emerge in the mid-90's.
It's not that easy to describe 16 Horsepower's music, as their sound, despite being indebted to several genres such as country, folk, bluegrass and rock, defies clear categorization.
Certainly an acquired taste, 16 Horsepower's rewarding debut EP immediately established them as one of the most remarkable outfits in 90's rock, led by the quirky but convincing charisma of David Eugene Edwards, a man as dedicated as they come.

Compositions such as "Black Soul Wire" (apt to be the first single from 16 Horsepower's A&M debut) have a life of their own because Edwards, Soll and Tola have infused them with a significant portion of theirs.
Such a description makes 16 Horsepower sound inaccessible, which it clearly is not: In around two years of life, the act has become one of the top local draws in the Denver-Boulder area.
During a get-together last year, Ferbrache forwarded a 16 Horsepower demo, and Fraser was so impressed that he got in touch with Jeff Suhi, who works in the artists-and-repertoire department at A&M. Suhi was just as floored by the cassette--so much so that he flew to Denver to catch 16 Horsepower live.

Sonically, 16 Horsepower is a pleasingly scary-sounding outfit, full of furiously vitriolic melodies and startling imagery.
The only thing is, "effect" is the right word for it, because despite 16 Horsepower's hickoid instrumentation and folksy tempos, Low Estate has about as much in common with both folk and the kind of Nashville country characterized by Reba McEntire and Garth Brooks as ska, punk or opera.
Indeed, 16 Horsepower's point of view isn't unique nor is the band going to shake the souls of either the believers or the unbelievers among us.

16 Horsepower: Olden - PopMatters Music Review
16 Horsepower mastermind David Eugene Edwards spent much of his childhood on the road with his grandfather, a Nazarene minister, travelling from town to town preaching old time religion.
The 16 Horsepower sound relies heavily on the bandoneon (an archaic, button-covered accordion), banjo, and a guitar style that veers back and forth between eerie slide work and slack-key wooziness.
The high point of 16 Horsepower's journey so far is last year's Folklore, a sombre, brooding disk that seemed to encapsulate everything Edwards had been working towards.

Sixteen Horsepower's singer David Eugene Edwards brings such a mix of vitriol and faith to his music that were he born in a different place and time, I imagine he could have been a snake preacher.
Since their start in the early '90s, 16 Horsepower have created and perfected a sound that's build around a fascinating, elegiac pulse.
With its use of banjo, accordion, lap steel, and stand-up bass and its songs about creaking pine porches, shallow graves, prison shoes, and big horses, Sixteen Horsepower would seem to be drawing from the same ancient wells of Americana as the Band.

I've been following 16 Hp from the time of their first full length release 'Sackcloth and Ashes' in 1996, when they were still essentially a local Denver band.
I've read a number of reviews of 16 Hp from all sorts of different publications and to date really no one seems to know what to make of them, exactly.
Indie rockers take them for hicks, and hard-core country fans are as often as not put off by their electric edge and dark sensibilities.

On "Hoarse", 16 Horsepower prove no less formidable in this respect: versions of songs by Joy Division, The Gun Club, and Creedence Clearwater Revival are indications of the band's diverse influences.

The instrumentation is fascinating, a sorta proto-retro-psycho-honky-tonk that's performed mostly on vintage instruments, including bandoneon (an old accordion-like instrument that creates an eerie ambiance for many of the tracks), banjo, cello and fiddle, along with the more usual (today) bass, guitar and drums.
I've experienced 16 Horsepower live, and they're well worth seeing when they come your way later this year.
As this music doesn't fit easily into any of the radio/media categories that usually expose new music today, it may be hard for them to find their niche.

16 Horsepower (David Eugene Edwards - vocals, concertina, guitar, banjo, hurdy-gurdy; Jean-Yves Tola - drums, piano; Stephen Taylor - lead guitar; Pascal Humbert - stand-up bass) have built up a huge fan base in America and Europe since their inception in the early '90s.

16 Horsepower is the latest great American act to deliver up folk-tinged alternative country-rock with a very, very, damaged core, as evidenced on the band's newly released Low Estate (AandM).
This is picking and a grinning with a vengeance; the mandolin never sounded quite so mean as it does on "Brimstone Rock," the opening track.
Edwards' voice is weird and jumpy, very close in spirit and timbre to that of the Ass Ponies' Chuck Cleaver; moreover, Edwards neatly mixes biblical words like "ye," "hath," and "beseech" with redneck vernacular, delivering lines like "that little Jesus freak needed a good ass clockin'" with great effect.
