1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, a musical with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Leonard Bernstein, was a legendary Broadway flop in 1976, running only seven performances at the Mark Hellinger Theatre.
The musical examined the establishment of the White House and its occupants from 1800 to1900.
The score is considered by many musical theater historians and aficionados to be a forgotten, or at least neglected, masterpiece.

A musical conducted tour of the Presidential headquarters, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (the White House's address) had a troubled tour en route to New York in 1976.
The fact that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a musical is sidelined, but the transformation is nonsensical.
It was the composer's first musical since West Side Story, and he wrote much more music for it than he had for any earlier musical (over two hours of it, reduced here to a generous 80 minutes).

A new suite of music from Leonard Bernstein's musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue receives its premiere on 25 April at Carnegie Hall, performed by the New York Pops Orchestra conducted by Charles Prince.
Charlie Harmon was music editor for the Bernstein Estate between 1989 and 1999.
The music in the suite is played without pause, though the first two sections could easily be excerpted and played as independent encores.

In 1974 he choreographed "The Wiz," the successful all-fl musical retelling of THE WIZARD OF OZ Faison won a Tony Award for his choreography, the first for an African American in that category.

Mordden begins the study with a relatively clear thesis: that between economic challenges and the change in American music that shifted attention away from Broadway, the Broadway theater in the 1970s went through a period of rapid decline that marked the end of the Broadway musical as a major part of American culture.
This sort of musical theory is both welcome and necessary to understanding the history of the Broadway musical, but it does limit the book’s audience to those who have enough musical background to follow Mordden’s arguments.
Mordden’s complaint that Bernstein and Lerner wrote a musical influenced by this movement is absurd.

Even at this stage of her career, Sarah was showing prowess as an opera singer, and this is a good indication of what was soon to follow.
It's hard to imagine that this musical was not popular, but I guess it's not just the music that makes a successful production.
This is an album of songs that came from musicals that never quite reached any level of popularity.
