After concluding his series with the seventy-fifth issue (the final arc is contained in The Wake), Gaiman embarked on a number of non-comic-related projects.
Gaiman's prowess at interweaving the various subplots is unchallenged in the comics medium; the pace is relentlessly swift and the build-up irresistible.
The final chapter of 1602 is its weakest, as Gaiman fails to find a wrap-up that's anywhere near as innovative as its unfolding.

Marvel Comics held another one of their regular press conferences this time focusing on "1602," the upcoming eight-issue Marvel Knights title by Neil Gaiman, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove, with covers by Scott McKowen (well known for his theater poster work) set to see release 8/13 (First issue 40 pages, subsequent issues 32, #3.50 each).
"1602" was chosen as the time period to set the book in because it provided Gaiman an exciting time in history in which to place these heroes.

Neil Gaiman (writer), Andy Kubert (illustrator), Richard Isanove (digital painting), et al., 1602
When it was announced that Neil Gaiman would be writing a new comic book, his first for Marvel Comics and first series since the ridiculously brilliant and successful The Sandman wrapped up its 75-issue run in 1996, it was hailed as his "triumphant return" to the form.
And while this may be true of any writer, it applies doubly to Gaiman as every character and scene, every tiny incident he writes — they all seem to have a complete history of their own and a myriad adventures just waiting to be written.
There are other, similar examples, some obvious, some much more subtle, but in the end, knowing exactly who's who on your own is not germane to the outcome of the story, especially since all the principal players are sufficiently introduced as their roles become clear.

I wasn't as sucked in as I have been by nearly EVERYTHING else the man has written - but given that he *is* working within continuity and he's still trying to introduce characters we're familiar with while giving them time-appropriate stories, it's off to a good start.
If the man who WROTE it doesn't think it's a good read until the third issue, I would imagine that we're not going to be impressed until then either.
