Secular music included songs for one or many voices, forms such as the frottola, chanson and madrigal, consort music for recorder or viol and other instruments, and dances for various ensembles; and towards the end of the period, the early dramatic precursors of opera such as monody, the madrigal comedy, and the intermedio.

For William Lawes was indeed a cavalier, born in 1602 to a musical family and, after having served a varied musical apprenticeship, appointed a musician to King Charles.
William Lawes' music is undergoing some revival of interest, especially since the 350th anniversary of his death in 1995, and, now, to coincide with the 400th aniversary of his birth - there are quite a few more recordings available and this may be the moment his music finds a wider audience.

Caccini’s works were closely connected to earlier and long-standing musical traditions, namely the techniques of the improvisatori, the Italian tradition of arranging polyphonic madrigals for voice and lute, as well as to the repertories of the villanella, canzonetta, and napolitana.
He was able to tap into the circulation of rare, unpublished music of a distinct Florentine flavor that ranged from compositions by noble amateurs to court musicians.
This largely private network of musical transmission among prominent Florentine amateurs, professional musicians, and nobles, was the precise means by which the Italian madrigal developed decades earlier in Florence.

 Time [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
If it were subjective in the way judgments of good food or good music are subjective, then it would be miraculous that everyone can so easily agree on the ordering of public events in time.
Nevertheless, it was not until 1602 that the concept of linear time was clearly formulated--by the English philosopher Francis Bacon.
In 1687, Newton advocated linear time when he represented time mathematically by using a line rather than a circle.
