		Music with essentially Renaissance characteristics continued to be composed, particularly in England, but also in Spain, Portugal, and France, for the first few decades of the 17th century (see English Madrigal School, air de cour).
		Secular music included songs for one or many voices, forms such as the frottola, chanson and madrigal, consort music for recorder or viol and other instruments, and dances for various ensembles; and towards the end of the period, the early dramatic precursors of opera such as monody, the madrigal comedy, and the intermedio.
		Renaissance music was modal as opposed to tonal.

		Monteverdi was a dramatic composer, bringing a depth of meaning from the text he set that turned each of his pieces into a convincing musical and dramatic statement.
		In Mantua he continued writing madrigals, and in 1607 produced his first work in the new genre of opera, his setting of Orfeo.

		In the John Cage Music Manuscript Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts there is a folder of 13 pages of handwritten music (plus one cover page) by John Cage that contains a work titled Chess Pieces (call number: JPB 95-3 Folder 109).
		For example, in chess, a person who creates puzzles and problems to be solved is called a composer, and two different sequences of moves that lead from one given position to another are said to be related by transposition.

	HOASM: Thomas Ravenscroft
		Ravenscroft taught music at Christ's Hospital in 1618-22, and in 1621 published a collection of psalms composed by himself and others entitled The whole Booke of Psalmes with the Hymnes Evangelicall and Songs Spirituall.
		Ravenscroft was also responsible for the preservation of the largest collection of popular vocal music in his three printed catch books: Pammelia(1609), Deuteromalia(1609), and Melismata(1611).
		The works were clearly intended for a popular audience; it is not clear whether they appealed to the same people as took an interest in the madrigal, or whether the publishers were trying to reach a new audience.

		The music is by Monteverdi, one of the greatest composers of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, and the libretto (text) is by Alessandro Striggio.
		There are two different kinds of writing for the singers: recitative, which is a more simple style used to actually tell the story, and aria, a more musically expressive, and often more complex, kind of writing which is more emotional than narrative.
