  MSN Encarta - Baroque Music
Opera was developed as a continuously sung musical drama by a musical and literary community (the “Camerata”) at Florence during the 1590s.
In order to provide the musical means for a powerful and flexible solo vocal style, new forms and techniques had to be developed, in particular the creation of an elevated style of accompanied song, or monody.
Earlier in the century, musical developments in Italy had even slightly influenced the vocal writing in the chapel's music, but the old styles and genres had shown a sturdy resilience in England, particularly in chamber music with the continued development of Renaissance-style contrapuntal fantasias for consorts of viols, and of lute-accompanied solo songs.

Music (Rome Reborn: The Vatican Library & Renaissance Culture)
Throughout the Renaissance, music formed a central element in the activities of the curia and a bright thread in the rich tapestry of Roman religious and artistic life.
This important manuscript of keyboard music is thought to be in the hand of the great keyboard composer, Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643), who served as organist in Saint Peter's from 1608 until his death.
The only major source of Renaissance secular music in the papal collections, this compilation of Franco-Flemish chansons was apparently copied in Florence in the late fifteenth century for a member of the Medici family.

King's Music - Early Music Review
Music may need to be transposed to fit modem amateur choirs, but specialist professional ensembles should surely match the tessituras implied by the music.
It hurts to see a great musical talent being misled into choosing the wrong pieces to play, to show himself up publicly as inadequate, not realising that it could have been recognised by the listeners were he to play music that was within his grasp, suited his temperament and stage in life.
On musical grounds, it makes very good sense for imitative entries to have the ends of phrases fading into melismas to avoid cluttering the texture and for the fill-in parts to be texted so that the chatter of up to 39 simultaneous consonants on a subordinate phrase is avoided.

Claudio Monteverdi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The dedication to Pope Paul V of a grand collection of church music known as the Vespers (1610) had already indicated an outwardlooking ambition, and in 1613 Monteverdi was appointed maestro di cappella at St. Mark's, Venice.
There Monteverdi was active in reorganizing and improving the cappella as well as writing music for it, but he was also able to accept commissions from elsewhere, including some from Mantua, for example the ballet Tirsi e Clori (1616) and an opera, La finta pazza Licori (1627, not performed, now lost).
In the 1610 collection of sacred music Monteverdi displayed the multiplicity of styles that characterize this part of his output.

The question of the authorship of the music was subsequently discussed by the present author in an article in the November 2001 issue of the Newsletter.
The composer started her musical career very early - she began to compose at the age of six and to write down her compositions at the age of twelve; thus, she was a child prodigy and, interestingly, later dedicated much of her efforts towards promoting music for the youth.

Admittedly the keyboard music of this period became the foundation of an extremely important repertory, but at the time, it was an insignificant instrument when compared with consort groups and the lute.
The consort repertory, though, was probably larger than simply the music written specifically for consort groups, as the lute song publications were undoubtedly also used to provide sets of short consort pieces, many in dance forms[16] or easily adaptable to dance measures.
