Institute methodology teachers were frequently recruited from the ranks of the secondary school, “pure” linguists frequently widened their perspectives to teach applied linguistics, many literature specialists developed culture and civilization syllabi and materials, and most of the institute participants made impressive gains in all four language skills.
The victims of this neglect were those students whose interest in foreign literature was neither pre-professional nor professional, but was born of a desire to enjoy and appreciate the literary expression of a foreign culture and to relate it to their own personal growth.
As opposed to literature studied by native speakers of the language of that literature, foreign literature can justifiably be used as a teaching device or tool, and a valuable one at that, in the teaching of language.

Schein's musical education continued under the court's Kapellmeister, and when his voice broke he enrolled in the prestigious Schulpforta school for music and the humanities.
He then enrolled at the University of Leipzig to study music, literature, and law.
Although he had always divided his attention between music and literature, in 1615 Schein became Kapellmeister to the Duke of Weimar; but quickly moved on as Kantor at St. Thomas in Leipzig in 1616.
