  Devotional Literature
Devotional Literature includes any religious book other than strictly doctrinal or theological works, intended to be used mainly for home devotion, that is, for meditation and prayer and also for uplift (edification).
This type of literature then increased during the 18th century when Mennonites deviated still further from their original path, opening hearts and minds to this new kind of piety of the enjoyment of one's certain salvation after having overcome sin and reached a state of sanctification.
The devotional literature, however, may be regarded as the true mirror of all these transitions and as an indicator of the spiritual life of the church and its members.

§10. Literature becomes a Profession. XIV. Book Production and Distribution, 1625–1800. Vol. 11. The Period ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Although the Copyright act of 1709 did not seem immediately to make the position of the author stronger, yet the leaven of betterment was surely at work, and it is during the eighteenth century that the author gradually comes to the front.
But, in the upper walks of the profession, the author was becoming a person of some importance, and one to be considered by the publisher.
Literature was rising to the rank of a liberal profession, and the man of letters occupies henceforth, a recognised, and not unimportant, place in society.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Italian Literature   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
This century in Italy, as elsewhere, is the golden age of vernacular ascetical and mystical literature, producing a rich harvest of translations from the Scriptures and the Fathers, of spiritual letters, sermons, and religious treatises no less remarkable for their fervour and unction than for their linguistic value.
Also in religious literature we have the ascetical letters of B. Giovanni Dominici (died 1419), a strenuous opponent of the pagan tendencies of the classical revival, and the vernacular sermons (1427) of St. Bernardine of Siena.
Political considerations colour most of the literature of the middle of the century, whether it be the historical writings of Cesare Balbo (1789-1853), the satirical and patriotic poems of Giuseppe Giusti (1809-50), the revolutionary lyrics of Gabriele Rossetti (1783-1854), the tragedies of Giovanbattista Niccolini (1782-1861), or the once admired romances of Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi (1804-73).

GO BRITANNIA! Wales: Welsh Literature - 17th Century Religious Literature
In 1625, James was succeeded as king by Charles I, for whom Welsh support was vital in his attempts to hold off the powers that united against his obstinate wish to rule without Parliament.
Their influence was a lasting one, and the nonconformist chapels that sprang up everywhere in their wake, such as those of the Independents, Baptists, Quakers and others created a heritage that still forms an integral part of the Welsh character and left a fertile field to be tilled by the Methodists in the next century.
Henry Vaughan, nevertheless, was able to speak and write in Welsh and was certainly aware of Welsh cultural and historical traditions as well as being influenced by the landscape of the Usk Valley.

But, among the wider and less cultivated class of readers, there was a large demand for small and cheap books in what is commonly known as practical divinity, and this literature formed an important feature in the stock-in-trade of the smaller booksellers.
More substantial examples of this class of popular literature are the “practical” works of Richard Baxter and The Pilgrim’s Progress, of which eleven editions appeared within ten years of its first publication.
