1631: On 7 November 1631, French astronomer and mathematician Pierre Gassendi made the first observation of the transit of a planet.
Kepler had predicted a transit of Mercury would occur in 1631.
When Gassendi observed the dot of Mercury passing across the face of the Sun, he was surprised - it seemed far too small, according to ancient conceptions of the relative sizes of heavenly objects.

Method 1631: Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants; Measurement of Mercury in Water
This final regulation amends the ``Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants'' under section 304(h) of the Clean Water Act by adding EPA Method 1631, Revision B: Mercury in Water by Oxidation, Purge and Trap, and Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry.
This Method measures mercury at the low levels associated with ambient water quality criteria.
