		His depiction of the armies of mercenaries of the time is too downbeat in the general upbeat tale to be totally pleasant, but serves admirably to create an overall tension and generate a series of crises necessary in any good story for one to care about the characters.
		Several historical figures occupy prominent or supporting roles in the novel include King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, Johan t'Serclaes, Count of Tilly, and Albrecht von Wallenstein, all general officers of note and fame.
		This rich interwoven complexity is perhaps the heart of the reason 1632 succeeded in garnering so much attention, and it's continuation (like real history) is readily appreciated by considering the series promises no less than five novels set in the year 1634 alone.

		The time travelers in 1632 are mostly coal miners and others from a definitely blue collar background.
		While 1632 could easily have become a war story, Flint is always careful to return the story to his characters, providing a focus for the reader and also presenting his workers in the best possible light.

	How it all started
		The setting of the novel is as follows: For reasons I won't go into here (read the book when it comes out, heh heh), a small town in West Virginia finds itself transposed in time and place into Germany in the middle of the Thirty Years War.
		On the other hand, the population of the town (which includes a lot of coal miners from the area who are in town that day for a wedding) are the type of blue-collar folks who can jury-rig damn near anything if the stuff is either there or can be obtained.
		Alternate history novels have a tendency (for obvious dramatic reasons) to focus too narrowly on the military dimension of the problem.
