Review of "1634: The Galileo Affair" by Eric Flint and Andrew Dennis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Even though "Ring of Fire" is an anthology, it should be read before "1634: The Galileo Affair," since stories in it introduce and develop many of the main characters (Father Mazzare, the Stones, Mazarini) and set up much of the plot.
At the beginning of "1634: The Galileo Affair," the new United States of Europe is not in the best strategic situation.
"1634: The Galileo Affair" is quite a bit different from the other novels that have so far been published in the 163x series (and probably from those yet to be published, as well).

Adult/High School–Fans of 1632 (2000), 1633 (2002), and Ring of Fire(2004, all Baen) will find that while 1634 is long on political intrigue and romance, it lacks the fast-paced military action that was the highlight of those books.
Simultaneously at war with England, France, Spain, Denmark, Austria and various other polities, it is running short of allies - the Dutch Republic is in dire straights, while Bohemia has its hands full trying to break away from Austria.
Ring of Fire is a departure from the linear story and is basically a series of short stories to lay the ground work for sub-plots and develop additional characters.

American Journeys Background on Journey of Jean Nicolet, 1634
Nicolet had learned of a tribe that the Huron called the Puans, or “People of the Sea,” and he convinced Champlain that they might possibly be stewards of the fabled Northwest Passage to China, hidden amongst shores of the unexplored western Great Lakes.
In 1634, Nicolet traveled the Ottawa River to the portage with the Nipissing River that empties into northern Lake Huron.
During his fourteen-month journey, Nicolet encountered the Ho-Chunk who lived near present-day Green Bay, Wisconsin, and populated the Fox River that flows into it, the first recorded European encounter with the Ho-Chunk.

The bashaws did not go all in company, but setting forth about an hour one after another, drew out their troops in length without confusion, not in much exact order of file and rank, as near no enemy.

 WebMuseum: Avercamp, Hendrick
From his earliest works, however--the first dated examples of which come from 1601--Avercamp's style is quite individual, and is most strongly connected not with any Amsterdam trends, but with the work of the minor Kampen artist Gerrit van der Horst (1581/1582-1629).
By 28 January 1614 Avercamp was back in Kampen, where he seems to have remained until his death in May 1634.
There, in relative isolation from the mainstreams of Dutch art, Avercamp devoted himself almost entirely to the painting of winter scenes, and specifically to depictions of crowds of people engaging in a wide range of activities on frozen rivers.
