Harpsichord by Andreas Ruckers, Antwerp, 1643, at the National Music Museum
The plain painted surfaces of harpsichords like the 1643 Ruckers were deemed insufficiently ornate for the pseudo-historical fantasies of 19th-century interior decoration, so its exterior surfaces and the area around the keyboard were redecorated with elaborate borders, vignettes, and garlands on a gold ground.
Now that the NMM's single-manual harpsichord by Andreas Ruckers, 1607 has been joined by the two-manual instrument made by the same maker in 1643, the NMM is one of only a handful of places in the world—the only place outside of Europe—to have an example of both kinds.
In addition to flowers, birds, insects, shrimp, and arabesques is the date, 1643, in red within a banner.

 Religio Medici
Reviews and observations on the work by Kenelm Digby forced Browne to provide a correct version of his text, and this appeared in 1643 with the author's endorsement that it was 'a full and intended copy of that piece which was most imperfectly and surreptitiously published before'.
Despite this assertion, it is likely that Browne was not entirely displeased at the earlier printing of his work, a supposition supported by the fact that he retained Crooke as the publisher of the authorized version.
The entire Monro Collection is relevant to any reader interested in Sir Thomas Browne; as well as a comprehensive collection of different editions of the Religio Medici, his other works are represented, along with some secondary literature: see a list of titles.

Monteverdi, Claudio (1567 - 1643)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Born in Cremona in 1567, Claudio Monteverdi served at the court of the Dukes of Mantua from the early 1590s until 1612, when he moved to Venice as maestro di cappella at the basilica of St. Mark, a position he retained until his death in 1643.
His importance as a proponent of the so-called seconda prattica, the new concerted music characteristic of the early Baroque, is unquestioned, as is his pre-eminence in the development of the new form of opera that sprang from the combination of music and rhetoric in the art of Italian monody.
The Vespers offer a dramatic and colourful exploitation of the possibilities of the new style in a work of great variety and interest well suited to the spacial effects available to performers in the great basilica of St. Mark, with its galleries and traditions of writing for contrasted groups of performers spacially separated.

Modern History Sourcebook: John Milton (1608-1674): Areopagitica, 1643
These restrictions disappeared with the abolition of the Star-Chamber in 1641, but very soon the Presbyterian majority in the Long Parliament began to pass orders framed with a view to enable them to suppress publications voicing the political and religious views of their opponents.
Finally the Order of June, 1643, reproduced here, roused Milton to protest, and he issued his famous plea for unlicensed printing in the following year.
As will be seen from the speech itself, he did his best to conciliate the Parliament by making cordial acknowledgment of its services to the cause of liberty, and he sought to persuade them to reverse their action by pointing out its inconsistency with these services.
