 Synthetic Life
The following research report in the highly respected peer-reviewed journal Science details the de novo creation of a complete functional virus from synthetic chemicals.
The year 2002 marks another milestone in science, with man's first creation of a virus, a living thing, from nonliving material.
The potential for virus synthesis is an important additional factor for consideration in designing the closing strategies of the poliovirus eradication campaign.

PLANETARY SCIENCE: ON THE COMPLEXITIES OF ASTEROIDS
These experiments will not only solve one of the most interesting and important puzzles in planetary science; they will also tell us how to tame any dangerous rogue asteroid.
It has therefore been a long-standing puzzle in planetary science that laboratory spectra of the most populous class of meteorite (ordinary chondrites, OC) do not match the remotely observed surface spectra of their presumed (S-complex) asteroidal parent bodies.
One of the proposed solutions to this perplexing observation is that "space weathering" modifies the exposed planetary surfaces over time through a variety of processes (such as solar and cosmic ray bombardment, micro-meteorite bombardment, and so on).

Abiogenesis and the Origin of Life
It should be noted that the mitochondria genome previously served as the only evidence to support gene variability independent of recombination because the organelle was thought to originate exclusively from maternal contributions.
However, it was recently reported in Science that recombination between parental DNA also occurs within the mitochondria.
Unfortunately, the creation science community has been denying the existence of new alleles rather than looking to cellular mechanisms for the source.4 Before the rapid production of diversity can be understood from an intelligent design standpoint, we must first acknowledge that new alleles are accumulating within recognized baramin, and closely investigate these changes.

In general, Kreijkamp-Kaspers told Science News Online, the findings were a big surprise, because her team had expected to find some substantial benefit attributable to the soy.
Many previous studies of soy supplementation in people had indicated benefits in bone density, heart risks, and brain health.
Certainly, their analyses of brain tissue showed that the soy-supplemented animals had dramatically higher activity than the control animals in those areas that are especially dependent on choline for signal processing and memory building.

When this oxide is reduced, for example, by annealing in vacuum, O vacancies are formed, which at the surface take the form of missing O atoms in the bridging O rows at the surface.
The authors suggest these results may have implications for the understanding of oxidation processes on metal oxides in general.
At the present time, analysis of the fundamentals of heterogeneous catalysis is largely dependent on the use of surface science models, real but simple systems such as single crystal surfaces whose structure may be varied by choosing different surface orientations.

More Regulation Of Human Tissue Research Urged
NEW YORK, Mar 11 (Reuters Health) -- The majority of research involving human tissue samples is being conducted without the approval of review boards or the informed consent of tissue donors, according to a report published in the March 12th issue of the journal Science.
The report authors call for more education for the research community regarding the ethical study of human tissues, tighter control by review boards, and disclosure of compliance with ethical regulations before publication of studies involving human tissue samples in scientific journals.
