Topics may include: the notion of literature, the relation of literature to criticism, critical analysis and evaluation, the making of literary cannons, as well as formative approaches to modern theory such as feminism, formalism, Marxism, phenomenology, poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, and structuralism.
The course will consider theories that discuss literature in relation to nature, beauty, the sublime, human spirit, society, ethics, politics, minorities, and the sexes.

The Icelandic sagas may be the first Newfoundland literature; nobody is sure of the exact location of Helluland, Marklan, and Vinland, and it is possible that one or two, or perhaps all three landfalls, were made on the coast of Labrador and north and east Newfoundland.
Notable among accounts of this kind were Anthony Parkhurst's voyage and description of the country in 1578, and the account of Sir Humphrey Gilbert's ill-fated expedition, as related by his chronicler Hayes, in 1583.
Still, the colony survived and grew, restrictions on settlement were gradually removed, and by the beginning of the nineteenth century, the era of the political pamphleteer and the scholarly churchman had arrived.

The major in comparative literature promotes the understanding of world literatures and cultures in various historical periods, including the present, for students with a special concern for the relationships among the languages and literatures of various civilizations.
The department requires a bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature or English from an accredited institution with at least a 3.0 grade-point average in the upper-division major courses, provided that a minimum of 24 units of upper-division course work is included.

We will examine why these works represent globally significant developments in the three main genres of literary art (drama, poetry, prose) and read them closely, looking for ways to join the ongoing, global conversation about them and to contend with the rich, often unexpected, ideas that they offer.
We will also look to draw important lines of similarity and difference between these works, both across time and across cultures, and often in new ways that a study of just one national literature couldn’t possibly permit us to see.
