  German Literature - LoveToKnow 1911
The transition from this rigid ecclesiastic spirit to a freer, more imaginative literature is to be seen in the lyric poetry inspired by the Virgin, in the legends of the saints which bulk so largely in the poetry of the 12th century, and in the general trend towards mysticism.
The disturbing and disintegrating element in the literature of the 13th century was thus the substitution of a utilitarian.didacticism for the idealism of chivalry.
The literature of the middle of the century was not wanting in achievement, but there was nothing buoyant or youthful about it; most significant of all, the generation between 1848 and 1880 was either oblivious or indifferent to the good work and to the new and germinating ideas which it produced.

Roemer Visscher stands at the threshold of the new Renaissance literature, himself practising the faded arts of the rhetoricians, but pointing by his counsel and his conversation to the naturalism of the great period.
Of the name preserved in the history of literature Justus van Effen 1 (1684-1735) was born at Utrecht, fell into poverty early in life, and was thrown very much among the company of French emigres, in connexion with whom he began literary life in 1713 by editing a French journal.
The recent literature of Holland presents the interesting phenomenon of an aesthetic revolution, carefully and cleverly planned, crowned with unanticipated success, and dying away in a languor encouraged by the complete absence of organized resistance.

 Russian Literature - LoveToKnow Watches
The style of Russian literature which prevailed from the time of Lomonosov was wholly based upon the French or pseudo-classical school.
During the last generation of the 19th century most of the Titans of her literature departed, and cannot be said to have left successors of equal merit.
The foundation of the Little Russian literature (written, as opposed to the oral) was laid by Ivan Kotliarevskiy (1769-1838), whose travesty of part of the Aeneid enjoys great popularity among some of his countrymen.

To profane literature belong the "Testament" Vladimir Monomachus, written in 1099, in which its author gives a recital of his enterprises; and the celebrated account of the battle of Igor ("Slovo" or "Polku Igorevie"), which was found in 1795 in the library of Count Musin Pushkin.
The most important monument of the literature of the sixteenth century is the "Domostroi", attributed to Sylvester, a priest who was the contemporary of Ivan the Terrible; Sylvester was, however, the compiler rather than the author of the work.
Russian literature lost its ecclesiastical character and assumed a lay form; and in ecclesiastical literature itself there was effected a transformation towards the modern, due to the reforms of Peter the Great.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Irish Literature
Early Irish literature and the sagas relating to the pre-Christian period of Irish history abound with references to ogham writing, which was almost certainly of pagan origin, and which continued to be employed up to the Christianization of the island.
After the substantially pagan efforts may come the early Christian literature, especially the lives of the saints, which are both numerous and valuable, visions, homilies, commentaries on the Scriptures, monastic rules, prayers, hymns, and all possible kinds of religious and didactic poetry.
Above all it is hard to accuse of time-serving or of pusillanimity a poet who could imperil his popularity in England by such a vigorous melody as that in which he compares the oppression of Ireland to the captivity of the Jews and prophecies the destruction of her tyrant.

While travel literature emerged in nineteenth-century Europe as an artifact of the gaze of "imperial eyes" over foreign lands, customs, and people, the analysis of travel has broadened its scope, and the traditional notion of the traveler, as both literary character and historical force, has been challenged.

 Literary Encyclopedia: German Baroque Literature
Deutsche Barockliteratur [German Baroque literature] is used as a convenient if controversial label to designate literature between the age of the Reformation and the Enlightenment, covering roughly 150 years from the 1570s to the 1720s.
Moreover, German Baroque literature was part of the European tradition, and as such comprised a significant body of Neo-Latin writings and foreign language translations, alongside original works in German.
The literature of the age is less impressive than the achievements in the pictorial arts, and recently the tendency has been to avoid the fluid term “German Baroque” altogether.
