In Greek mythology, Queen Rhodope of Thrace was the wife of Haemus.
Haemus was vain and haughty and compared himself and Rhodope to Zeus and Hera, who were offended and changed the couple into mountains (the Balkan mountains and Rhodope mountains, respectively).
The Rhodope mountains are in Greece and Bulgaria.

Not too long after her encounter with the Pharaoh, Rhodope was visited by one of Charaksos' slaves who had been sent by his master to tell her that he'd fallen in love with a beautiful girl while on a trip to Greece, and that she was free to do as she pleased.
Rhodope (or Rhodopis) may not have been her real name, which was said by some ancients to have been Doricha (or Dorichi), and that she acquired the nickname Rhodope (from ρόδινος = rhodinos = rosy/pink or ρώδι = rodi = pomegranate) because of her rosy complexion.

On Oct 19, 2005, David Dunham watched the asteroid (166) Rhodope briefly cover the star Regulus.
Rhodope is not far from quadrature, which means a fair fraction of its motion relative to Earth will be radial, rather than across the plane of the sky.

Subduction during the late Jurassic-Cretaceous time resulted in the formation of calc-alkaline magmatics in Rhodope, Serbo-Macedonian and Pelagonian Massifs where granitoids host quartz-molybdenum and porphyry copper-molybdenum, while the Laramian sheet-shape intrusives are associated with quartz-scheelite-molybdenite and Au-As-Pb-Zn-sulfosalts together with porphyry-molybdenum-copper, precious metal and gold copper massive sulphide mineralizations in the Banat area and Srednogorje.
The base-metal and epithermal low - and high sulphidation gold deposits in the eastern part of the Rhodope massif are results of the Late Paleogene collisional stage of the development of the tectono-magmatic and hydrothermal processes during the subduction of the African under the Eurasian tectonic plate.
Data for high-pressure metamorphism in the continental crust of the Rhodope massif are scarce.

The smallest diameter (PA~85.5 deg) is not less than the value estimated by Radick in 1981: 1.32mas in yellow light, at wavelength 576.8 nm.
(166) Rhodope will be at a distance of 3.0727 Astronomical Unit at the time of occultation.

On Wednesday morning, October 19th, the asteroid (166) Rhodope occulted the star Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation Leo (the Lion) for up to two seconds in a path crossing southern Portugal, southern Spain, southern Italy, and Greece.
Concerning Regulus, I don't know about the various Rhodope occn recordings, but it would be great if some information on Regulus' size could be derived from this exceptional event...

He provided data on certain species of birds found in the foothills of the Rhodopes near the town of Stanimaka (now Assenovgrad), and in 1838, using a specimen found in Plovdiv, described the turtle dove as a species new to science.
The western part of the Rhodopes, the highest point of which is at 2191 m a.s.l.
It should be noted that the highest numbers of birds of prey in Europe have been found in the southeast part of the Rhodopes in Greece, near to the Bulgarian portion of these mountains.

Un tempo estremamente variabile, sicuramente interessante dal punto di vista meteorologico (arco Lunare visibile da Acconìa di Curinga, molto bello, e splendida alba sullo Jonio, con tanto di “goccia”), ma disastroso dal punto di vista astronomico, ci ha impedito di assistere a questo evento piu’ unico che raro.
L’occultazione, comunque, c’e’ stata ed e’ stata osservata, pur tra le nubi, da Vibo Valentia, con una durata di circa un secondo: alle ore 04:24:13 UT del 19 ottobre 2005, l'asteroide 166 Rhodope ha occultato Regolo, la stella più brillante della costellazione del Leone.
Anche in Spagna e in Grecia sono state compiute osservazioni e, dai primi dati, sembrerebbe dedursi un diametro per l’asteroide Rhodope di circa 59 km, superiore alla stima di 35 km attualmente indicata (si veda l’indirizzo UAI: http://www.uai.it/index.php?tipo=Aandid=1053)

COMOTINI, Feb 10 (A.A) - Greek police disclosed on Wednesday that the explosion which occured on Monday evening in front of the Turkish Consulate building was caused by a time bomb.
The Police Commandership in Rhodope issued a written statement saying that the bomb experts revealed that a small power time bomb had been left in front of the Turkish Consulate and the evidences had been sent to the police laboratory for investigation.
Meanwhile, police questioned many people within the framework of its investigation into the incident, and there has not been a Turkish citizen among the questioned people up until now.
