Since the first landing of African slaves in the colony of South Carolina in 1670, sacred music in our state has metamorphosed from the first strains of chanting on the vessels by which they were transported to the glorious sound of contemporary gospel that remains alive and effervescent in religious communities all across our nation.
Music for funeral ceremonies became a vehicle for expressing devotion, hope, and a vision for the future.
One of the strongest characteristics of African music to persist was the call-and- response pattern, which still remains a dominant feature of African-American sacred music.

Practically all his music was designed to satisfy the tastes and interests of Louis XIV.
Lully’s music was correspondingly elevated, in the stately overtures, the carefully moulded ‘récitatif simple’ and the statuesque choruses; many of the airs, too, draw as much attention to the galant mores of the court as to the stage action.
