The point of view is clearly western, and this is evident in the music examples that accompany almost every country or culture's entry--all have been subjected to western notation and are arranged in late nineteenth-century grand musical style.
Compiled by John Playford (1623-1687), a publisher of music books, the treatise is considered an important work on English country dances, a form of dance where couples perform a series of set patterns.
Appropriate music, in the form of a treble line, is provided for each dance.

Shocked by our community's response to piracy
My morals as far as piracy are defined through consistency - Scanning a book and putting it on a torrent linking site is contributing to the piracy of that book, as it would be for music, movies, games, or any other kind of software or media.
But exchanging physical copies with close friends is not piracy in my book, and for the time being at least, the legal system seems content to view it the same way.
I think that part of the problem with piracy is simply the word itself.

Why the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act Cannot Prevent Piracy
A lawsuit from the Recording Industry Artists Association has successfully blocked Napster from being used to transmit copyrighted music files, but Napster was quickly replaced with various decentralized clones that could not be shut down by a court order.
On the surface, this makes sense because these companies are fewer in number and appear to have little reason not to comply with the law.
Hollywood executives, with fresh memories of the Napster spectacle (and still stung by the newer clones), have been eagerly searching for ways to prevent large-scale piracy of movies, albums, and other copyrighted works.

Technology Discussion: Hollywood can sue over movie, music piracy
WASHINGTON - Hollywood and the music industry can file piracy lawsuits against technology companies caught encouraging customers to steal music and movies over the Internet, the Supreme Court ruled Monday.
The justices, aiming to curtail what they called a "staggering" volume of piracy online, largely set aside concerns that new lawsuits would inhibit technology companies from developing the next iPod or other high-tech gadgets or services.
The unanimous ruling is expected to have little immediate impact on consumers, though critics said it could lead companies to include digital locks to discourage illegal behavior.

 Time [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
If it were subjective in the way judgments of good food or good music are subjective, then it would be miraculous that everyone can so easily agree on the ordering of public events in time.
In 1687, Newton advocated linear time when he represented time mathematically by using a line rather than a circle.
Nevertheless, it was not until 1602 that the concept of linear time was clearly formulated--by the English philosopher Francis Bacon.

The World of Elizabeth Jacquet de La Guerre
During much of the reign of Louis XIV, the ceremonial and dramatic music of the French court was dominated by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687); after Lully’s death, some French composers, working mainly in chamber music, began to experiment with new forms recently developed in Italy, such as the instrumental sonata and the dramatic cantata.
The pieces in the 1687 book show a style midway between the fresh daring of Louis Couperin’s pieces and the mature refinement of eighteenth-century French harpsichord music, including that of her own 1707 collection.
Around 1650 Louis Couperin, with his brothers, all natives of the Brie region outside Paris, played their instruments to serenade the local squire, Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, himself a musician and harpsichordist who had been knighted by Louis XIV for his accomplishments.
