In the anti-tank role it was replaced by the 120 mm BAT recoilless rifle after the war.
As a tank gun it was succeeded by the 20 pounder.
The 17 pounder anti-tank guns saw action in Korea, not only against tanks but in general support use against bunker positions.

The last use of the 25 pounder in combat was during the Battle of Mirbat in 1972 in Oman.
The basic idea was to build a single weapon with the direct-fire capability of the 18 pounder with the high-angle fire of the howitzer, firing a shell about half way between the two in size, around 3.5 to 4 in (90 to 100 mm) of about 30 pounds (14 kg).
The 25 pounder was the main field artillery gun used by British Commonwealth infantry divisions during the Second World War.

The 20 pounder was used only for a short time before the Royal Ordnance Factories introduced the now famous 105 mm L7 gun.

The earliest account for 17 Pounder (76.2mm) APDS that I have found seems to be in October 1944 and possibly not for the Firefly but only for Royal Artillery Anti-Tank Regiments.
The infantry were luckier in that they kept their 6 Pounder Anti-tank guns and by mid June 1944 I understand that they may have recieved some APDS rounds to use.
The 109mm penetration for the 17 pdr at 500 yards is for uncapped AP shot from the sources I have; to the best of my knowledge APCR was never produced for this gun, though you never know.

Designed from the start as an high-velocity anti tank gun, during the war the 17 Pounder proved itself to be an outstanding and reliable weapon.
This was the first attempt to get the 17 pounder gun on tracks, but due production delays the A30 was surpassed by the M4 Sherman 17 pdr variants, which ironically was designed as an ‘back-up’ would the A30 fail to meet it’s potential.
The first conversion was made on an Sherman V (M4A4), the standard 75mm turret was partially stripped and the 17 pdr was mounted in an new mantled, the radio was mounted on an armoured box on the turret rear.

The only difference with the Achilles II is that it fires a slightly heavier 17 pounder main gun and the chasis is based on the M4A3 instead of the M4A2.
The 17 pounder, great as it is, can't penetrate the front armor of the heaviest German tanks unless at point blank range.
The 17 pounder is still effective against most German tanks up to the Tiger I model and the only really tough ones are the Jadpanther, Jadtiger and the Tiger IIs.

The AC I was ahead of it'sBritish counter parts in that it was designed to be able to be up gunned from the 2 pounder to the 6 pounder when it became available how ever this gun was needed in the middle east so none were allotted to the AC I project.
The 25 pounder was intended to be placed in the improved Sentinel to be given the title AC III which also incorporated a smooth glassis plate dispensing with the hull mounted machine gun and gunner.
By this time the 17 pounder was being produced in Australia and tests were conducted to see if it was practical in mount it in the Sentinel.

By July 1944, the 6 pounder was proving inadequate against the bulk of German medium and heavy armour; against the frontal armour of heavier tanks like the Tiger or Panther, the 6-pounder was all but useless.

First used in North Africa in June 1941, the 6 pounder version was used at El Alamein, but it too was under-armed and few Crusaders were used after the North Africa campaign.
Introduced prematurely in 1941, the original Churchills were under-armed with the 2 pounder gun and unreliable.
The tank shown has a 6 pounder gun, but eventually a 75 mm gun, then a 17 pounder was used and reliability problems were solved.

According to Hogg's British and American Artillery of WWII the 17 pounder arose from a meeting held at Adelphi House London on 21 November, 1940 to examin a heavier replacemenet fort the 6 Pounder.
Due to delays in finalizing the design of the carriage and need to have something to counter Tigers, the interim version on a 25 pdr carriage was test fired in Sept 1942 and the first exasmples sent to North Africa later that year.
During an April, 1943 visit to the UK, Crang provided the Director Royal Artillery, General Eldridge with a simple design fix that would allow the 17 pounder to be mounted in the M10 using the exisitng 3 inch gun's buffer and recuperator.

Contemporary enemy tanks were no challenge for the Ordnance QF 6-pounder 7 cwt, but against later, much heavier German designs (Panther, Tiger) the standard 6 pounder shot was insufficient to penetrate the front armour.
When the 17-pounder gun entered service already in 1943, the smaller and more maneuverable 6 pounder continued to be used by the British Army for some 20 years after the war, and also saw service with US forces.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle had one report of a 20 and a 17 pound channel cat taken at the mouth of Adobe Creek near the County Park with nightcrawlers.
I was fishing in 16 feet of water and caught the fish on shrimp as well as an 8 pounder also on shrimp.
I caught the 17 pounder on a live crawdad and the 8 pounder on anchovy.

I'm thinking that the 17 pounder would be a bit overpowered against the usual German tanks such as the PzIVH.
The tiger received 10 hits from 6 pounder guns but only two acheived penetration and that was through the side armour.
It was found that the 6 pounder the most numerous A/T in the British armour could not penetrate the frontal armour unless at point blank range, however the newer 17 pounder did stand a better chance.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) reports a few large channel cats being taken with live crawdads near Rattlesnake Island and a few including a 17 pounder caught at the mouth of the Clearlake Oaks Keys with anchovies.
Shrimp was the hot bait and most of the fish were taken in 14 to 16 feet of water.
The majority of fish have been running from around 8 to 12 pounds with an occasional 16 or 17 pounder.

Now i'm no expert, but i see no reason why the 30 pounder couldn't be fitted in a turret with a tank developed around it.
The 17 pounder was good, but still not good enough against tigers.
The 32 pounder really would have given us a much needed egde that i'm sure would have made the battle of Cean a different story...

This suggests that the water/glycol bins could be adapted to take the 17 Pounder ammunition, despite its larger size, compared to the 75mm rounds.
This letter stated very clearly that 17 Pounder conversions must be on a petrol engined Sherman.
What if the only available 75mm M4A1's (we know that 76mm T23 turret tanks were excluded as the turret layout precluded the installation of the 17 Pounder gun, within the time-scales and industrial capability available in 1944-45) only had electric traverse and or M34 mantlets.

The 6 pounder was widely used in British and Commonwealth service, firstly in artillery anti-tank regiments when first introduced in 1942 and later, when the 17 pounder took over as the main anti-tank gun, in infantry units as their own integral artillery.
It was a capable gun, even capable of taking on the Tiger which it did in Tunisia and later even taking out the well-known German tank commander Michael Wittmann.
Although designed before the Second World War, the loss of large quantities of equipment in the 1940 French campaign meant that the earlier 2 pounder gun remained in production and service before factories were able to change over to the bigger, better gun.
