On 28 October 1999 the squadron was reactivated at AFB Bloemspruit to as an attack helicopter squadron, equipped with the new Rooivalk.
Reformed in 1946 as a Ventura equipped bomber squadron at Swartkops, the squadron was renumbered as 25 Squadron on 1 January 1951.

 -- SQUADRON 17 --
Although 17 Squadron was the first dedicated helicopter squadron in the SAAF it was not the first squadron to operate helicopters.
In 1968 17 Squadron consolidated at AFB Swartkop, and B and C Flights gave birth to 16 Squadron, in Durban, and Helicopter Conversion Unit (HCU) in Cape Town.
In 1992 19 Squadron was re-located to AFB Louis Trichardt with Oryx helicopters.

The first squadron in combat was VP-135, deployed in the Aleutian Islands in 1943 April.
During one attack on a power station in Amsterdam on 1943 May 3, New Zealand's 487 Squadron were told the target was of such importance attack was to be continued regardless of opposition.
487 Squadron RNZAF, (operating in Europe as part of the Royal Air Force), was equipped with the type, although losses (including on 3 May 1943 the loss of all 11 aircraft attacking Amsterdam), lead to their replacement with the de Havilland Mosquito in June.

The squadron is operating a school for fighter pilots until 23 Sep with P-38's, P-39's, P-40's and Spitfires.
This squadron transitions for fighters to B-17's and serves as a radar detection and countermeasures unit until Sep 44.
The 15th Bombardment Squadron (Light), and 311th Bombardment Squadron (Dive), Twelfth Air Force, are disbanded at Nouvion, Algeria and Gela, Sicily respectively.

The SAAF commenced vacating the base in 1999, with the intention of leaving only the SAAF Museum behind and thus the base is now known as 'Swartkop', an extension of AFB Waterkloof.
However, the SAAF then changed it's mind and it is not known when the SAAF will eventually vacate all its operational units.
Although it was announced in 2002 that the units based at AFB Ysterplaat would relocate to the existing SAAF premises at Cape Town International Airport, it was subsequently decided to move the units at AFB Yysterplaat Detached to AFB Ysterplaat and AFB Langebaanweg, with the units moving in 2003.

 Army Air Forces in World War II
A detachment of the 339th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group, ceases operating from Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands with P-38's and returns to it's base on New Caledonia Island.
The 46th and 72d Fighter Squadrons, 15th Fighter Group, transfer from Canton Island in the Phoenix Islands and Wheeler Field, Territory of Hawaii respectively to Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands with P-39's.
Personnel and equipment of the 154th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron and the Weather Reconnaissance Detachment are subsequently integrated, and the unit is redesignated the 154th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (Medium) on 12 May 44.

 SAAF
The S-55 was introduced into the SAAF in 1956, with further airframes arriving in 1956 and 1957.
The only information we have is that they languished in a hanger and in due course given to the SAAF Museum at Swartskop with WV224 finding it’s way to Ysterplaat.
It is believed it was refinished in extra dark sea grey with upper surfaces and sky lower surfaces while with 848 squadron.

Apparently must be an 11 Squadron SAAF plane, the pilot was rescued and hidden by Italian partisans.
SAAF 1211V killed on 21 September 1944 when his Dakota of 48 Sqr crashed off the British coast returning from a supply mission to Arnhem.
Three Beufighters from the squadron were lost on 22nd February 1944 while attacking a convoy off the coast of Crete, it comprised of the Enemy Motor Vessel "LIVENZA" which was accompanied by two escort Vessels Five (5) miles North of Candia.

The 76th Fighter Squadron, 23d Fighter Group, transfers from Hengyang to Kweilin, China with P-40's; a detachment of the squadron is operating from Suichwan.

During the Cold War period, the SAAF found itself engaged in the Berlin Airlift, Korean war and finally the prolonged Border War with Angola.
With no imminent threat, the future role of the SAAF is envisioned as one of humanitarian assistance throughout Southern Africa.
The cuts affected the SAAF deeply, and generally only one squadron in each role is being retained today.

A South African Air Force (SAAF) Oryx helicopter from 17 Squadron at Swartkop airfield offered courtesy flights to disadvantaged students from Voortrekkerhoogte High School on 21 November 2006.
Speaking at Swartkop shortly before departure to Salvokop, Capt Kyle Jonker who was in charge of the operation said the involvement of members from 17 Squadron shows that the SAAF cares for the community in which it serves.
To many of the students, who were ferried from the play grounds of Jopie Fourie Primary School in Salvokop to view the beauty of Tshwane from the sky, the SAAF gesture was a golden opportunity since they were boarding an aircraft for the first time in their lives.

My Grandfather Herbert 'Lofty' Lord was posted to 12 squadron SAAF in July 1941 and was part of a crew flying Martin Marylands in North Africa.
I'm an American writer, conducting research on RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, who was born in Springs, and is best known as the instigator of what became known as the "Great Escape" from Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany, on 24 March 1944.
* 26 Squadron SAAF during its deployment to Takoradi in Gold Coast (now Ghana) March to September 1943 I believe the squadron was involved in anti-submarine patrols and may have formed part of the RAF "ferry service" assembling and flying aircraft to the N African theatre.

 First Agusta Spotted [Archive] - PPRuNe Forums
Apparently it is not a SAAF machine but an Agusta machine undergoing "Hot and High" trials.
I also have a photo (courtesy of LJV) of what the new SAAF Augusta 109s will look like.
This machine is the 5th production example, made in Italy, and is shown with the badge of No 17 Squadron/SAAF..
