04-05 Undergraduate Catalog--COE Computer Science Course Descriptions
The department offers a bachelor of science program to prepare specialists in the area of computer science itself, a minor in computer science, and individual courses directed to the needs of non-majors who will be using computers as tools in their chosen career areas.
The curriculum in computer science is designed to provide a broad general computer science background that will prepare a student either to enter a professional career as a computer scientist or to continue training at the graduate level.
In all, a minimum of 37 credit hours of computer science is required: 1705, 1706, 2204, 2604, 2704, 3204, 3604, (3304 or 3414), (3704 or 3724), (4104 or 4114 or 4124), six credits in two other 4000-level courses, and an approved technical elective.

At 17 million light-years away, the individual stars of the galaxy NGC 1705 are out of range of all but the sharp eyes of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
NGC 1705 is an ideal laboratory to conduct investigations on the history of star formation.
This image was taken in March 1999 and November 2000 by an international science team led by Monica Tosi at Italy's National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna.

In particular, NGC 1705 is seen a as a useful laboratory for studying the history of star formation.
NGC 1705 has been forming new stars throughout its lifetime, astronomers say, but a burst of star-formation activity occurred as recently as 26 to 31 million years ago.
NGC 1705 could be as old as 13.5 billion years, which is practically the beginning of the universe, according to a separate recent study.

Newton summarized his discoveries in terrestrial and celestial mechanics in his Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica [mathematical principles of natural philosophy] (1687), one of the greatest milestones in the history of science.
In it he showed how his principle of universal gravitation provided an explanation both of falling bodies on the earth and of the motions of planets, comets, and other bodies in the heavens.
He was made warden of the mint in 1696 and master in 1699, being knighted in 1705 in recognition of his services at the mint as much as for his scientific accomplishments.

Early on, Mehler certainly didn't have the atmosphere of interdisciplinary collegiality that allows the pursuit of cognitive science to flourish as it does now.
The introductory chapters' overview of the mind melding (and sometimes clashing) that went on between Mehler and other great thinkers in those early years (Noam Chomsky, George Miller, and Jean Piaget play prominent roles) is pure pleasure.
