Alessandro Scarlatti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Scarlatti's music forms an important link between the early Baroque Italian vocal styles of the 17th century, with their centers in Florence, Venice and Rome, and the classical school of the 18th century, which culminated in Mozart.
These represent the most intellectual type of chamber-music of their period, and it is to be regretted that they have remained almost entirely in manuscript, since a careful study of them is indispensable to anyone who wishes to form an adequate idea of Scarlatti's development.
His few remaining masses (the story of his having composed two hundred is hardly credible) and church music in general are comparatively unimportant, except the great St Cecilia Mass (1721), which is one of the first attempts at the style which reached its height in the great masses of Johann Sebastian Bach and Beethoven.

Music conventionally described as Baroque encompasses a wide range of styles from a wide geographic region, mostly in Europe, composed during a period of approximately 150 years.
Baroque music often strives for a greater level of emotional intensity than Renaissance music, and a Baroque piece often uniformly depicts a single particular emotion (exultation, grief, piety, etc.) (see doctrine of the affections).
Baroque music was more often written for virtuoso singers and instrumentalists, and is characteristically harder to perform than Renaissance music, although idiomatic instrumental writing was one of the most important innovations of the period.

In February 1684 he became Maestro di Cappella to the viceroy of Naples, through the intrigues of his sister, an opera singer, who was the mistress of an influential noble in that city.
In the interval he enjoyed the patronage of Ferdinand III of Tuscany, for whose private theatre near Florence he composed operas, and of Cardinal Ottoboni, who made him his Maestro di Cappella, and procured him a similar post at the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome (1703).
These represent the most intellectual type of chamber-music of their period, and it is to be regretted that they have remained almost entirely in manuscript, since a careful study of them is indispensable to any one who wishes to form an adequate idea of Scarlatti's development.

In both the Old Testament and New Testament, music played an important part in spiritual worship and was widely used in teaching doctrinal truth to believers.
Its meaning is derived from the idea of twanging a string on a musical instrument so that it vibrates, hence, it means "to play on a stringed instrument." In the New Testament, the verb (psallo) it means to sing a hymn, to celebrate the praises of God.
A musician would write music that would fit the meter of the words being sung, and the tunes given to the lyrics were themselves given certain names and designations.

 Alessandro Scarlatti
Alessandro Scarlatti (May 2, 1660 – October 24, 1725) was a Baroque music composer especially famous for his operas.
Scarlatti’s music forms the most important link between the tentative “new music” of the 17th century and the classical school of the 18th, which culminated in Mozart.
The operas composed for Ferdinand de Medici are lost; they might have given a more favourable idea of his style, his correspondence with the prince showing that they were composed with a very sincere sense of inspiration.

 Bach, J. S.: Arnstadt (1703-1707)
In its reprimand the town council noted, unfairly, that Bach was neglecting the composition of figural music (technically not one of his contractual duties).
Each time Bach replied that in his view, as organist, this was not his responsibility, and that if the church wanted someone to attend to these duties they should hire a choir director, which they absolutely could not afford to do considering the high salary they were paying their organist.
The Consistory was remarkably patient, even generous, with Bach, but it was an uncomfortable relationship, and in 1707, to the relief of the authorities, Bach removed himself.

He wrote a wide variety of music - from beautiful works for harpsichord, to masterpieces for organ, by way of vocal music.
He clearly wants to show just how rich and delightful this music is. His touch is just and precise, and he uses all of the instrument's capacities, offering a full range of sounds through its various stops and registers.
The purity of the "good" keys is much more precise, but this leaves certain notes (sharps and flats) sounding "out of tune".) It should be noted that some of the works on these recordings were originally written for organ; Mortensen has decided to include some of these pieces that are playable on the harpsichord.
