  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: English Literature
It is not unlikely that the written literature may have begun as early as the sixth century, but at any rate, by the middle of the seventh century the traces of it are clear in the work of Cædmon, according to the testimony of Bede.
It is the custom of historians of literature to divide the literary life of Chaucer into a French, an Italian, and an English period, according as his work was influenced by the manner of each national literature.
Yet it is to this acquaintance with Italy and its literature that we owe the revival of English poetry after its long relapse since the death of Chaucer.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: German Literature
Literature as an art suffered by being pressed into the service of religious controversy; it became polemic or didactic, and its prevailing form was prose.
Its effect on the German language was enormous; the dialect in which it is written, a Middle German dialect used in the chancery of Upper Saxony, became gradually the norm for both Protestant and Catholic writers, and is thus the basis of the modern literary German.
Literature was devoid of originality and substance; the formal side absorbed the chief attention of the writers.

In the spring of 1709, Jacob Tonson advertised the publication of a new edition of Shakespeare's plays, the first to appear on the London print market in over a quarter of a century, edited by Nicholas Rowe.
His decision to advance vernacular literature is striking when seen within the larger context of the late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century publishing trade.
While Tonson began promoting vernacular literature early in his career, the majority of his publications was plain, and in some instances, made from cheap materials.

This in effect is his central thesis, and he pursues it admirably in a book which shows an impressive grasp of Russian and European literature alike.
The author chooses to call this 'dark side' of Russian literature 'nihilism,' which he defines as 'an inherent hostility to man and to life, a cold inhuman vision' (2).
As Ponomareff points out in his conclusion, two diametrically opposed readings of Russian literature are indeed possible, and in concentrating on its more negative side he is providing a refreshingly new interpretation and a greater depth of understanding.
