The musical life of Germany in those days was chiefly centred in the numerous small courts, each of which did its best to imitate the magnificence of Louis XIV at Paris and Versailles.
In 1709 he became the Pope's representative for North Germany, and it was doubtless owing to his heavy ecclesiastical duties that he resigned his musical post in favour of Handel, although Hanover remained his chief place of residence until his death in 1728.
German music at that date was provincial; Italian music was the music of the great world, because it was the music of the theatre.

These, containing some of his finest concertos, were issued in Amsterdam and widely circulated in northern Europe; this prompted visiting musicians to seek him out in Venice and in some cases commission works from him (notably for the Dresden court).
He wrote a quantity of sacred works, chiefly for the Pietà girls, using a vigorous style in which the influence of the concerto is often marked.
He was by most accounts a difficult man; in 1738 he was forbidden entry to Ferrara ostensibly because of his refusal to say Mass and his relationship with the singer Anna Giraud, a pupil of his with whom he travelled.

This list includes music written during the period from the late fifteenth century through the middle of the eighteenth century.
The majority of the music from this time span is considered to be Baroque (roughly 1600-1750) but music from the Renaissance Period that preceded the Baroque period, as well as a few examples of the Galant and Rococo styles which grew beyond the High Baroque style, is also included in this list.
The term "orchestral music" as applied here refers to music played by a larger number of performers and may include music of theatrical origin (i.e., scores for ballets or incidental music for plays or operas), or concertante music (i.e., concertos for one or more solo instruments).
