His first year was made difficult by Cadillac who was still at Detroit and reluctant to give up his authority and privileges.
In 1712 a war party of Ottawas and Pottawatomies pursuing the Fox and Mascutens arrived in Detroit and insisted on attacking.

He entered the navy in his youth, became a captain in 1692, and rear-admiral of the white in 1710, and in 1711 was knighted by Queen Anne.
In the last-named year he commanded the fleet that sailed from Boston on 30 July, for the conquest of Canada.
Half of Walker's ships were wrecked in a storm on Isle aux (Eufs, on St. Lawrence river, and Walker returned to England, where he charged that his troubles had been due to want of proper co-operation on the part of the New Englanders.

 Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de la Verendrye
Born at Three Rivers, Quebec, he studied briefly at the Quebec seminary, was commissioned in the colonial regulars in 1696 and was a member of Hertel de Rouville's force which attacked Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704.
He campaigned briefly in Newfoundland, went to France in 1708 and was commissioned in the Bretagne Regiment, being seriously wounded and captured by the British on September 11, 1709; he returned to Canada in 1712.
He married, fathered six children, and lived quietly for 15 years, entering meanwhile into the fur trade in a small way.
