The history of literature is the historical development of writings in prose or poetry which attempt to provide entertainment, enlightenment, or instruction to the reader/hearer/observer, as well as the development of the literary techniques used in the communication of these pieces.
Egyptian literature was not included in early studies because the writings of Ancient Egypt were not translated into European languages until the 19th century when the Rosetta stone was deciphered.
Among the innovations of Arabic literature was Ibn Khaldun's perspective on chronicling past events—by fully rejecting supernatural explanations, Khaldun essentially invented the scientific or sociological approach to history.

Born in 1713 in Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire, England, he moved to Reading at age 16 to apprentice himself to a printer named William Carnan.
Finally, in 1765, shortly before his death, Newbery wrote and published his classic children's book, The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes, in which success is keyed to education, very much in the tradition of the time and the use of the term "morals" in the title of Perrault's original collection.
Postscript: In 1922, in recognition of Newbery's pioneering work as an author and publisher of children's literature, The American Library Association instituted the Newbery Medal to be awarded annually to the most distinguished work of children's literature.

The dream of the riches of China and Japan, the posts in Africa, the expansion in Ireland and the Canary Islands (as preludes to western expansion), the sense of what makes someone within and without that English culture uncivilized, strange, marginal or barbarous to the English polity and imagination are primary topics in this course.
