	Introductory Note. Sir Richard Steele. 1909-14. English Essays: Sidney to Macaulay. The Harvard Classics
		Steele left the University to enter the army, and opened his literary career, while still a soldier, with “The Christian Hero.” In 1702 he began to write for the stage, and was of notable influence in redeeming the English drama from the indecency which had marked much of it since the Restoration.
		Like Addison, he combined politics with literature, and in 1715 was knighted as a reward for his services to the Hanoverian party.
		The chief glory of the “Spectator” is, of course, the club, and it was in the essay which follows that Steele first sketched the characters composing it.

		Shortly before he returned to the Assembly, in the election of 1715, Norris began a long and distinguished judicial career, when he was commissioned a justice of the peace for Philadelphia County on 4 June 1715; he was awarded second rank in the commission, behind Richard Hill.
		By the end of 1715 Norris was writing to correspondents that" high flying clergy and pretending lawyers" were claiming that the parliamentary law in itself repealed Pennsylvania's affirmation law.

		In 1713, Steele carried on a celebrated political controversy with Swift, the chief Tory spokesman, in the course of which he wrote his pamphlet The Crisis.
		He became a Whig member of Parliament in 1713, was expelled by his political enemies the following year, but returned under the Hanoverians, and was knighted in 1715.
		His opposition to the Peerage Bill in his weekly, the Plebeian (1719), involved him in a quarrel with Addison, and Steele's attempt at reconciliation was frustrated by his friend's death.
