Baroque Composers — Overview, individual biographies
An underlying, all-pervading and inspirational influence on Italian baroque music was provided by its violin-makers, mainly centered in Cremona - the Amati family in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Guarneri and Stradivari families in the 17th and 18th.
His performance of sacred music, instrumental and vocal, made Lübeck a place of pilgrimage for musicians anxious to advance in their art, and the young Sebastian Bach himself traveled two hundred miles to hear them and to sit at the feet of the Master.
As the 18th century progressed, European music was also becoming increasingly familiar in the United States, a particularly enthusiastic exponent being Thomas Jefferson, politician, diplomat, foreign minister to France, vice president under John Adams, two-term president of the United States, and of course, author of the Declaration of Independence.

In reviewing the accounts of music that have characterized musical and intellectual history, it is clear that the Pythagoreans are reborn from age to age.
He was a faithful Platonist in his prescription of temperate rhythms and simple melodies so that music would not produce imaginative, exciting, and hence immoral, effects.
For another philosopher-mathematician, the German Gottfried von Leibniz (1646-1716), music reflected a universal rhythm and mirrored a reality that was fundamentally mathematical, to be experienced in the mind as a subconscious apprehension of numerical relationships.

 Music publishing in Baroque Europe
It is generally accepted that baroque music "began" — if one can use such a term — in Italy, pointing particularly at Corelli as the originator of much that was to become commonplace in baroque musical forms.
Though Italy had pioneered the printing of lined music manuscript paper, actual scores were still printed using movable type, which was expensive, cumbersome, and too inflexible to reproduce clearly all the ties and other markings which are essential if the composer is to convey his intentions to performers with any degree of accuracy.
Another interesting side-effect was to spread Italian music throughout northern Europe, at the same time encouraging Italian composers to write for a wider musical taste.

 Baroque Music - Part Two
The principal legacy of Baroque music is, of course, the music itself.
But most fell by the wayside: the music of Monteverdi and Purcell, of Couperin and Rameau, and of so many others was too dependent for their musical effect on the colors and techniques of Baroque performance to survive the "translation" to performance on later instruments played with later techniques.

Like Bach's, Vivaldi's music fell out of favour for many years, but the 20th century, in particular since the revival of interest in authentic methods of performing baroque music, has seen it re-established.
No composer did more to establish the violoncello as a solo instrument, and he dsiplayed a keen interest in the use of unusual instruments: it its the infinite variety and invention of his work that has made it so beloved 300 years after his birth.

 Essentials of Music - Composers
Visitors to Venice in the early eighteenth century often made a point of attending one of the regular concerts given by the orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà.
An important part of his duties was to supply concertos for the orchestra; over the course of his career he composed over five hundred concertos, both for solo instruments (principally violin) and for combinations of instruments.
Although Vivaldi wrote a great deal of music in other genres, including more than fifty operas, it is his concertos that have granted him a lasting place in musical history.
