Chromaticism in the Classical era: In Baroque music, chromaticism (the use of notes extraneous to the diatonic scale) was used freely for expressive effects at emotionally intense situations such as grief or lament especially in recitatives (opera, oratorio), cantata, and in instrumental program pieces.

 Music In England - Foreign Music
In the sixteenth century and earlier it was one of the most musical countries in Europe; but from the appearance of Händel, about 1720, German music and German composers absorbed public attention to the exclusion of the natives no one of whom, it may be added, evinced creative powers of any high order.
One of the most graceful and talented of English composers was Sir William Sterndale Bennett (1816-1875), who came of a musical stock, and was duly trained as a choir boy in King's Chapel, and at the Royal Academy of Music.
The successor of Sterndale Bennett as principal of he Royal Academy of Music was Sir George A. Macfarren (1813-1887), who although totally blind for many years before his death, produced a greater number of important compositions than any other English composer of the century.

 JNL9: The Oboe Ensemble in German Military and City Music up to 1720
The schalmei (shawm), whose use in military music of course went back much further, was used in the Brandenburg-Prussian army for the first time in 1646 four schalmeis served under the Great Elector--two schalmei, one alto pommer and one bass dulcian.
The Sonsfeld music collection in the possession of the Prussian General Friedrich Otto Freiherr von Wittenhorst-Sonsfeld (1678-1755) contains almost exclusively works from the early 18th century, in which several oboes and bassoons are required, in most cases accompanied by a trumpet.
The town music group was, of course, an extended training school for the new generation of musicians.
