Community leaders have attributed the absence of tribal courts to several factors: early and intense contact with Russians and white Americans, a high non-Native population leading to a high level of integration and intermarriage, and a number of municipal governments to handle enforcement of local ordinances.
The state court judge agreed, ruling that this was police misconduct with which the state court could not be associated, because otherwise the floodgates of tribal litigation would be opened.

As president of the State Senate, Mann was instrumental in establishing the Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837 during the height of Whig and Unitarian influence in the state.
Michigan was the first state, upon its entrance into the Union in 1835, to constitutionally prohibit the use of public funds "for the benefit of religious societies or theological seminaries." The second state was Wisconsin, which included an identical prohibition in its original constitution of 1848.

From 1720 to 1763 French administration of the Illinois Country was centered at the forts, built successively over a 40-year period on or near the same site.
French leaders hoped that the Illinois Country, which was governed from distant Canada, would be a rich source of furs and precious metals.
The annual Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres, held the first full weekend in June to recreate the traditional French fur trapper's holiday of the eighteenth-century, is one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in the nation.

Not long after the passage of the constitution, the state’s general assembly adopted a pro-slavery resolution that announced its approval of slavery in slave-holding states and at the same time condemned the formation of abolition societies within Illinois’ boundaries.
The United States Congress ended the legal institution of slavery with the passage of the 13th Amendment in 1865.

 Southwest Illinois News - Fort de Chartres State Historic Site
A plaque inside the main gateway states that the structure was restored by the National Society Daughters of America Colonists and the State of Illinois in 1936.
British military leaders soon deemed the fort, which was renamed Fort Cavendish, of little practical value and abandoned it as a military post in 1771.
Visitors to the fort in the 1820s noted trees growing in the walls and buildings, which began to literally disappear as local residents scavenged stone and timber to serve as material for other structures.
