Baroque music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Baroque music, from the Baroque period of Western Classical Music, was composed roughly from the time of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) to that of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).
Baroque music uses longer lines and stronger rhythms: the initial line is extended, either alone or accompanied only by the basso continuo, until the theme reappears in another voice.
In Classical music, which followed the Baroque, the role of counterpoint was diminished (albeit repeatedly rediscovered and reintroduced; see fugue), and replaced by a homophonic texture.

Dolmetsch Online - Music Theory Online - Staffs, Clefs & Pitch Notation
Musical notation describes the pitch (how high or low), temporal position (when to start) and duration (how long) of discrete elements, or sounds, we call notes.
Music is read from 'left' to 'right', in the same direction as you are reading this text.
In music we have terms that serve a similar function; for example, ' note ', ' bar ', ' line ', ' section ', ' movement ' and ' score '.

There is a brief introduction in which Siepmann places the Brandenburgs in context, quoting from various sources, before embarking upon quite a thorough motivic examination of the music.
The analysis is accurate and fluently delivered, and there is never a doubt that the salient features of the music are being discussed.
There is no attempt at uncovering the niceties of authentic performance, since it is assumed that the music will be always as it is heard on these discs.

Simpler theory: classical music fans are ageing fuddy duddies, fixated on the recordings they knew and loved in their youth.
The pointer is to an interesting-looking music metadata project called musicbrainz (more information here), which appears to have a lot of good ideas about how to do the job properly, but one conceptual flaw that I see as quite fundamental.

 Thomas Jefferson's Music
Manuscript music book containing a mixture of songs, hymns, excerpts from Corelli violin solos, minuets, and scales and preludes in all of the major and minor keys.
Jefferson bought Virginia an expensive Spanish guitar in 1816, and there are many passages in the family correspondence that mention the fact that she played it, probably rather well.
The date of this guitar music indicates that it was very likely used by Virginia, and perhaps later by Cornelia and Septimia.

“One Symphony”, commissioned by German Radio and conducted with sensitivity by Peter Rundel, is contrasted here with settings of Ernst Meister texts performed by the Chamber Music and Songs Ensemble which Michael Mantler formed soon after relocating to Copenhagen in the early 1990s.
The stark and impressive “One symphony” is modestly described by its composer: “The basic concept was ‘symphony’ in its most elementary form — simply the utilisation of a relatively large number and variety of instruments to perform musical materials organised to create a larger whole with a logical continuity.
It should exist as a piece of pure music, leaving the listeners to arrive at their own emotional interpretations.
