In the last years of the reign of Louis XIV, who died in 1715, up until Louis XV took the throne in 1723, France went through a period of crisis.
This period was marked by conflict between the French king and the pope; the prohibition of the Jansenist sect at Port Royal; the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, resulting in renewed persecution of Protestants; and the increased suffering of the lower classes.
It was the preeminent democratic genre, documenting detail and fact rather than the universal and general principles that the 18th-century philosophes pursued.

The word "literature" is here used in a very wide sense, and this gives rise to considerable difficulty in drawing the line of exclusion.
Perhaps his most valuable services to historical literature were his laying down the lines of the great _Cambridge Modern History_, and his collection of a library of 60,000 vols., which after his death was purchased by an American millionaire and presented to Lord Morley of Blackburn, who placed it in the University of Cambridge.
In 1723 he was pardoned and returned to England, and an act was passed in 1725 restoring his forfeited estates, but still excluding him from the House of Lords.

 Literary Encyclopedia: German Baroque Literature
Deutsche Barockliteratur [German Baroque literature] is used as a convenient if controversial label to designate literature between the age of the Reformation and the Enlightenment, covering roughly 150 years from the 1570s to the 1720s.
Moreover, German Baroque literature was part of the European tradition, and as such comprised a significant body of Neo-Latin writings and foreign language translations, alongside original works in German.
The literature of the age is less impressive than the achievements in the pictorial arts, and recently the tendency has been to avoid the fluid term “German Baroque” altogether.
