Compassionate Revolutionaries is the fascinating story of the Moravian missionaries who came to America in the 1730s and 1740s to bring Christianity to the Indians.
The story is made more interesting by the fact that among the Moravian missionaries were ancestors of George W. Bush, a President committed to discharging his awesome duties with compassion.
The book relates the role of the Demuth family, from whom the President is descended, in the reorganization of the Moravian Church at Herrnhut, Saxony in the 1720s, the early missionary work in Georgia in the 1730s, the settlement of Bethlehem and Nazareth, Pennsylvania in the 1740s, and Gnadenhutten, Ohio, in the early 1800s.

Advertisements in the Proceedings of the Old Bailey
By the end of the 1730s, even these rather worthy advertisements were themselves replaced either by blank paper, or advertisements for the services and products of the shorthand specialist and printer who produced the Proceedings.
During the second and third decades of the eighteenth century the Proceedings sought a wide and popular audience, and were able to attract diverse advertisers as a result.
But from the late 1730s onwards they evolved into a more serious and comprehensive form, and eventually became, by the 1770s, a publication of record used by the Court itself.

Of particular interest is his contextualisation of evangelical religiosity with the cultural trends and patterns of each period under scrutiny, which make this a book which has a scope far beyond mere ecclesiastical history.

The First Great Awakening - The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries - Divining America: Religion and the National ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
What historians call "the first Great Awakening" can best be described as a revitalization of religious piety that swept through the American colonies between the 1730s and the 1770s.
That revival was part of a much broader movement, an evangelical upsurge taking place simultaneously on the other side of the Atlantic, most notably in England, Scotland, and Germany.
Led by the Tennent family--Reverend William Tennent, a Scots-Irish immigrant, and his four sons, all clergymen--the Presbyterians not only initiated religious revivals in those colonies during the 1730s but also established a seminary to train clergymen whose fervid, heartfelt preaching would bring sinners to experience evangelical conversion.
