American Literature: Prose - MSN Encarta
Calls for an American literature began during the Revolution and became more frequent and urgent as independence was assured.
Pioneering lexicographer Noah Webster led a call for uniquely American traditions in language and literature, and he undertook the massive project of developing an American dictionary.
What made this work radical was his insistence on defining words based not only on traditional English usage but also on American variations in usage, called Americanisms, and his inclusion of at least 5000 new words not previously recognized by English dictionaries.

The relatively late founding of the Georgia colony in 1733 and the persistence of the frontier well into the nineteenth century significantly influenced the state's literature—especially its penchant for humor and violence—and its emphasis on regional themes and settings.
Elmo (one of the most popular novels of the nineteenth century), the main character, Edna Earle, sees a man killed in a duel, the man's wife die of paralysis, her own grandfather die of old age, and a baby and others killed in a train wreck.

Junior standing; prior experience in either literature or the life sciences is desirable though not mandatory.
While it may not be obvious to the casual observer, literature and medicine have an important common concern: the human being, our human vulnerabilities and potentials for wholeness, and our inner and outer healing and growth.
In this course we will be examining works of literature in which this common cause is perhaps more evident than usual – works dealing overtly with illness and healing, some works about or by physicians and other care-givers, works that raise questions about ethical behavior in the face of sickness, and so on.
