Bus 174 - The Movie   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Bus 174 won the FIPRESCI award for best Brazilian film at the recent Rio film festival. On June 12 2000, Sandro do Nascimento held up a public bus in a middle-class residential area of Rio De Janeiro and took the passengers hostage.
As you already know, "Ônibus 174" is the movie which reconstructs that famous hijacking involving line 174 which resulted in the death of a hostage, Geísa, and then in the killing of the hijacker himself, Sandro Nascimento.
"Ônibus 174" seems to tell us that in spite of the simple fictional world presented in the news, in spite of the clear picture provided by socioeconomic analysis, each person is also constituted by impenetrable abysses.

Blame It On Rio: Jose Padilha's "Bus 174"
A perfectly nice bus in many respects, #174 was possessed of one significant flaw -- on that July morning it was hijacked by a distraught, confused, and possibly high young man, sparking a protracted police standoff with tragic consequences.
Jose Padilha's "Bus 174" relates the bus hijacking and ensuing hostage crisis in excruciating detail, using interviews with participants and miles of news footage shot during the event.
The tone is set in the film's opening minutes; as an aerial camera glides over the pristine blue waters and lush green parks of Rio's shoreline, a series of voiceovers by drug addicts and street people, intoning the brutal experiences of their lives, belie the beauty on-screen.

airodyssey.net - "Falling from the Sky: Flight 174"
In the meantime, Captain Bob Pearson (William Devane) is dressing for his morning routine, CWA flight 174 from Montreal to Edmonton, as he sips his coffee with his wife Beth (Marriette Hartley).
We see two friends of opposite gender, obviously roommates, a businessman always recording on his microcassette recorder, an angry high school coach, another businessman who is having a small serious conversation with his girlfriend, and one of the Flight Attendants, Lynn Brown (Shelley Hack) who kisses goodbye her husband and her little baby.
Falling from the Sky: Flight 174 is good, but missed out many details, due to a lack of research about the region where the flight departed, Montreal, and possible lack of resources.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Bus 174 -- Jose Padilha - DVD - Wide Screen
In June of 2000, a young homeless man, evidently high on drugs, made a failed attempt to rob a bus in a wealthy Rio de Janeiro neighborhood.
The film uses a great deal of file footage of the event, in addition to interviews with hostages, policemen, reporters, and others connected to the incident and to the unstable and desperate young man at its center.
Sandro was also imprisoned at a youth facility, and in a city jail, and the appalling conditions in those prisons are also depicted in the film.

The references that gave any attenuation figures for 174 at all tended to concentrate on VHF and UHF frequencies, with possibly a token 10 MHz figure thrown in.
I also was aware that Bill had written an article for the long wave hobby publication Lowdown on signal attenuation in coax at lower frequencies.

Bus 174 Movie Review at Hollywood Video
In Bus 174, filmmakers Jose Padilha and Felipe Lacerda look at the gross inequities in Brazilian society and trace the history of Sandro himself, who, as a small child, witnessed his mother's murder.
With her gone, there was no place else for him to go, and he wound up living on the streets of Rio.
Director Padilha tells the story of the Bus 174 incident in parallel fashion, cutting back and forth between news footage of the hostage crisis and the story of Sandro's life, effectively setting up the events that led to the predicament.
