  Baroque Composers — Overview, individual biographies
An underlying, all-pervading and inspirational influence on Italian baroque music was provided by its violin-makers, mainly centered in Cremona - the Amati family in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Guarneri and Stradivari families in the 17th and 18th.
His performance of sacred music, instrumental and vocal, made Lübeck a place of pilgrimage for musicians anxious to advance in their art, and the young Sebastian Bach himself traveled two hundred miles to hear them and to sit at the feet of the Master.
As the 18th century progressed, European music was also becoming increasingly familiar in the United States, a particularly enthusiastic exponent being Thomas Jefferson, politician, diplomat, foreign minister to France, vice president under John Adams, two-term president of the United States, and of course, author of the Declaration of Independence.

Common musical vehicles for these new musical ideals included the sonata cycle and its derived forms--sonatas, string quartets, concerti, symphonies, trios, etc. Many operas were composed, along with masses, songs for voice and piano, and much other chamber music.
Even if his music was not as brash and radical as that of Beethoven (who was his pupil at one point), or as profound and probing as Mozart's (who was a good friend of his), Haydn's music shows a very solid structure that was an important part of the Classical era.
His monument is his music which remains as alive as it ever was and is one of the true treasures of Western civilization.

The Oxford Dictionary of Music denies that the symphonies are ‘elephantine monsters but’ but instead ‘are now recognised as being in the Austrian tradition of Schubert’s last symphony….admired for their combination of contrapuntal splendour with intense melodic beauty and grandeur...’ I say ‘amen’ to that.
I suggested that Beethoven’s life was in his music – struggling to develop the traditional form he inherited against the spectrum of his unquiet life, the turbulence discernable in the music itself.

But the death of "classical" music is not the death of music, and it's not even the death of "serious" music.
Like it or not, contemporary classical music (an inexact term, but it seems to be the best we have, "organized sound" suggesting little) is part of a continuum, and it's critics' jobs to make that as clear as they can.
Classical music is thus marginalized, since it does not fit the three minute form for the commercial break; it is extremely expensive to perform, record and tour; the education required for its production and reception is long and expensive; and it is not well-adapted to marketing through sexual imagery, just to name a few examples.
