The course explores - the historical determinants of literary texts - the relation of literary texts to other discourses - the ways in which history and historical documents can be read as kinds of narrative and representation - a range of case studies from the medieval to the contemporary.
This introductory course to the academic study of literature (which utilises the same literary materials as 'What is Literature?') will concern itself with the methods of essay-writing and note taking, the use of quotation, the art of annotation, and the function of bibliography (including on-line bibliographical research).
We shall analyse the work of the actors, their motivation and means of communication, examining the link between the unconscious and effective performance, evaluating the effectiveness of different performance styles in contrasting social situations.
